By Professional what do you mean?

Applying camoflage patterns, markings, etc. or restoration of an older Helmet?

If it's just repainting the shell a solid color, that's simple enough. Good prep work is half the job.

Why not save money and grab 2 cans of Krylon Fusion camo spray paint? Khaki and brown. The ones you see in use are user-painted.

-Get some flat tan, and flat green spray paint.
-Get any oils off of the helmet's surface.
-Paint the helmet tan
-Place grass all over the helmet
-spray with green in some areas of the helmet
-Remove the grass and drape netting over the helmet
-Use more green to touch up the areas you missed before, but over the netting this time

This technique provides a decent camo pattern. Myself and my buddy did this to his Remington 710 .270 and it turned out pretty darn good. The colors are totally up to you of course.

Make sure you're in a well ventilated area, preferably in a fumehood, or outside with a decent wind speed. Last time I painted without those precautions my face started twitching uncontrollably that I thought I had Parkinson's.

Lots of wind speed? Umm yeah no. If you want to do a quality paint job, you don't want any wind. Not only will the spray pattern be all messed up, but you'll get sand and dirt in your paint from the wind. If you do it inside you do want good ventilation though.

IIRC M1 & M1917 helmets had crushed Cork added to the mix for the roughened finish. Postwar, silica was the preferred roughener. I dont know if British, German, etc. followed the same path

True. :) Just wear a proper mask because those fumes are toxic.
