Two schoolgirls blinded in acid attack in Afghanistan

Story Highlights
Men on motorcycle spray girls with acid from squirt guns, military says
No one claims responsibility, but network says Taliban suspected
Girls were prohibited from going to school under Taliban regime
Top U.S. commander calls insurgents "dishonorable"

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Two men on a motorcycle used water pistols to spray acid on girls walking to school Wednesday in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, blinding at least two of them, military spokesmen said.
U.S. Col. Greg Julian said Afghanistan's National Military Command Center told him that four girls were hurt in the incident. Two were blinded and remain hospitalized, and two were treated and released, he said.
The men escaped after the attack, and no one claimed responsibility for it, but Arab-language network Al-Jazeera said Taliban militants were suspected to be responsible.
The incident occurred about 8 a.m. near Mirwais Nika Girls High School in the Meir Weis Mena district.
Kandahar government spokesman Parwaz Ayoubi gave different figures on the number of girls injured, saying six were burned, one of them severely. He called the attackers "enemies of education."
Girls were forbidden to attend school under the Taliban (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/The_Taliban), which ruled the country from 1996 to 2001, when U.S.-led forces removed them from power.
According to Al-Jazeera, the girls were attacked with battery acid. Two teenage sisters, one of whom suffered serious burns, were among the victims.
"We were on the way to school when two men on motorbikes stopped next to us. One of them threw acid on my sister's face. I tried to help her, and then they threw acid on me, too," Latefa, 16, told the Qatar-based satellite network.
"We were shouting, and people came to see what was going on. Then the two men escaped," she said.
Latefa told Al-Jazeera that she was hurt, and her 18-year-old sister was in serious condition with acid burns on her face.
Al-Jazeera said schoolgirls in Kandahar can be recognized by their uniform of black pants, white shirt, black coat and head scarf.
The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/Afghanistan) condemned the incident, as well as a suicide bombing that occurred near a government building hours later that killed and wounded several civilians, including women and children.
"These cowardly acts reflect how dishonorable the insurgents truly are," Gen. David McKiernan said in a statement posted on the Web site of the International Security Assistance Force.
"No one can honestly say they are fighting for the people, then purposefully attack innocent women and children," he said.

It's not uncommon to see males throwing rocks at females/little girls in the streets. The hatred for females in Afghanistan seems to be deeply imbedded. Truly horrible.

I am amazed that actions like this and the attitudes that support those actions have been ignore by "Women Rights" advocates in the West. Seems only women who are in the West and of the proper political persuasion are worthy of support.

There is no justification for the barbaric practices that reduces any human to sub-animal status, where a person's goats and sheep have more protective rights.

This is so despicable. This is not a religious thing. More of a cultural thing IMO. I believe in Karma and no matter what they'll get their's.

Acid attack girl vows to continue school [/URL]

Head of Kabul’s Education Department Naziba Norstani visits Shamsia, 17, victim of an acid attack by the Taliban, in Kabul, yesterday

KABUL: An Afghan teenager whose face was burned in an acid attack by suspected extremists vowed from her hospital bed yesterday to continue going to school even if it put her life in danger.

Men on motorbikes used a water pistol to spray acid into the faces of Shamsia and around dozen other girls as they arrived at school wearing all-covering burqas in Kandahar on Wednesday.

Shamsia, 17, was the most badly wounded and had some acid enter her eyes. She was transferred to a military hospital in Kabul where she was visited yesterday by other schoolgirls, accompanied by media.

"I will go to my school if they kill me," she told reporters. "My message for the enemies is that if they do this 100 times, I am still going to continue my studies."

It is not clear who carried out the attack which President Hamid Karzai and other officials blamed on the "enemies of Afghanistan" - a broad term that most often refers to extremist Taliban insurgents.
However a Taliban spokesman, Yousuf Ahmadi, said by telephone his group would "never do such a cowardly thing against girls and children".

The conservative Islamic 1996-2001 Taliban regime stopped girls from going to school. The education sector has since become among the main targets of a wave of unrest linked to an insurgency led by the hardliners.

This year around 115 schools have been set on fire, bombed or bulldozed in attacks education ministry spokesman Hamed Elmi blamed on "the opposition".

About 120 people in the education sector have been killed in attacks, he said.

Security fears have caused more than 640 schools to close, most of them in volatile districts in the south and east of the country, Elmi said.

About 11,000 schools across Afghanistan remain open, he added.

In some remote parts of the country, opposition groups have attacked schools because they were the only government building targets in the area and also presented a "soft target", Elmi said.

In areas close to the border with Pakistan it also seemed militants wanted to close schools to force boys to join their ranks or go to madrassas, Islamic religious schools across the border, he said. - AFP

I believe that if you could understand this practice, I would not want to know you.

One day our troops will leave this country, just as other armies have left. I hope the difference is that the indigenous people see that women have a real role in society.

is this what the taliban do to their ppl ?

Yes. The western powers build schools for children and the Taliban destroy the schools, because girls get education in the schools. But the news don't reach "us" too often, because there is so much else going on. My point is that the Americans etc. are also trying to do good and build the country, but this kind of "progress" is not wanted by the Taliban.

The Taliban are the scum of the earth.

Girls were prohibited from attending school under the Taliban and were permitted to return to school when the Taliban were ousted in 2001. However, over 40 girls schools have been bombed, set on fire, or violently attacked in Afghanistan since 2001, causing some families to keep their daughters at home out of fear. Currently, the resurgence of the Taliban, the continuing influence of extremist warlords, and lack of security are placing women and girls at extreme risk of violence and intimidation.
School Principal Zaher Din plans to resume classes on Saturday for the 665 girls

The Taliban should be exterminated, and all foreign fighters be they saudi, chechen, uzbeks, pakistani, what ever, should be burnt alive at the stake.
