Obama aide apologises to US-Arabs
President-elect Barack Obama's White House chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel has apologised to the US-Arab community for remarks made by his father.
Benjamin Emanuel told an Israeli newspaper that his son, who is Jewish, would "obviously influence the president to be pro-Israel".
He also referred to Arabs in a way which a leading Arab-American group called an "unacceptable smear".
A spokesman for Rahm Emanuel said he had called the group to apologise.
Mr Emanuel also offered to meet members of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.
In the interview last week with the Israeli daily newspaper Ma'ariv, Israeli-born Benjamin Emanuel talked about his son's new job.
Anger at remarks
He said: "Obviously he'll influence the president to be pro-Israel. Why wouldn't he? What is he, an Arab? He's not going to be mopping floors at the White House."
His remarks angered the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, which called on Rahm Emanuel to condemn them.
On Thursday, his office issued a statement saying that the veteran Democratic congressman had called the group's president, Mary Rose Oakar.

We cannot allow Arabs and Muslims to be portrayed in these unacceptable terms

It said that he had "apologised on behalf of his family and offered to meet with representatives of the Arab-American community at an appropriate time in the future".
On its website, the committee quoted Mr Rahm as saying: "From the fullness of my heart, I personally apologise on behalf of my family and me. These are not the values upon which I was raised or those of my family."
Ms Oakar welcomed the apology, saying: "We cannot allow Arabs and Muslims to be portrayed in these unacceptable terms."
Rahm Emanuel served as deputy chief of staff to Bill Clinton and analysts say he has a reputation for forceful negotiation and unwavering loyalty.
As Mr Obama's chief of staff - and one of his closest advisers - he will be responsible for delivering the president's policy platform.
Some Middle East commentators have voiced concern about the appointment of Mr Emanuel, who has a pro-Israel record.
However, the congressman himself dismissed the idea and said that Mr Obama did not need his influence to "orientate his policy toward Israel".

Lesson to be learned from this? Keep your old folk on a short leash when aspiring for higher political office.

His apology is unnecessary. Firstly, because his father is free to say whatever he wants.

Secondly, because it would take a person of astounding naivete to believe that the son of an Irgun member, a man who was raised speaking Hebrew and volunteered in Israel during Desert Storm, can or will be unbiased towards Israel. I don't except him to be and will be completely unsurprised when he turns out to be just as hawkishly pro-Israel as every President since JFK . The sun also happens to rise in the East.

Rictor, the question is why did Obama select this fellow? Because of the Jewish vote? (largely pro-Obama)

Ridiculous, everybody know that an Arab can't get the security clearance to mop floors at the White House.

Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Clinton Administration, is Arab-American.

So is Republican John Sununu.

Beats me. The Jewish vote has traditionally had no problem leaning towards the Dems anyway, so who knows. Obama's team seems to be composed largely of Clinton's close associates. My guess would be that it was more based on Emanuel's personal clout than his pro-Israeli views, which Obama seems shares in either case. Time will tell.

If Livni wins the elections in Israel, it'll be interesting to see what will happen in the West Bank.

Not to turn this into a religious thing, because no one is obliged to represent such-and-such a demographic, but they are both second-generation Arab Christians. About as Arab as Kucinich is Croatian.

C'mon, stop seeing judeo-zionist ZOG conspiricies here. He chose Emanuel because he has a proven track record of getting things done, being an organizer, and if this case is an example, showing humility when needed, and knowing who to call to show it.

I agree, Kaplan. I think a lot of this is making a mountain out of a molehill. It's perfectly natural that Emanuel's dad would be excited, and I'm sure there are a fair amount of Kenyans who have it in their mind that their country will receive special treatment too.

Rahm Emanuel has nothing to apologize for.

And by the way, you're correct Rictor, but the again there are a lot of 2nd and 3rd generation Christian Arab-Americans, who still strongly identify with their ethnicity and have been deeply involved in issues that deal with the Middle East, such as James Abouresk (sp?), James Zogby, Bobby Rahall, ad others.

It's not about seeing conspiracies under the bed. It's about recognising that at that level no-one gets a guernsey without fitting an agenda. There's no conspiracy, just agendas.
