Some of you may have played Metal Gear Solid 2, one of the best videogames in history. I'd like to know who the first enemies are you encounter as Snake. You know, the mercs from Colonel Gurlukovich who capture the tanker.
Do these forces really exist? What kind of forces are they anyway? What kind of equipment do they wear? Where can i get this? :?
I have 2 screenshots and a concept art so this might help identify them:

That's Russian gear, eg. the helmet is paratrooper helmet, you can find them all over the net quite cheap. The rifle is AK variant, in the sketch is says AKS??U.
I guess the rest of the gear is also Russian, check out the Russian pic thread on this forum, maybe you'll find exact info there?

They are closest to the old VDV loadout of the early nineties. They are wearing the paratrooper helmet, but not the tanker helmet. The backpack and ammo pouches are the RD-54 Airborne Assault Pack (you won't find it in black). I once saw what the camouflage pattern was but now I can't remember, maybe TTsKO, but I am guessing. It's the afghanka cut on the uniform though. Try ebay or soviet-propaganda.com and you will find most of these things. The uniform is old so you may have to try tridentmilitary.com as well if you can't find it on ebay.

Ughh... what part of the "This story and it's elements are fictional" clause at the beginning of the game did you miss?

They wear black tank/apc crew caps, if you check the pics you see that they have the "bumps" on the sides where the speakers are in, normally if they would have made it realistic they should have similar ones but without these things.
In some scenes they have NV googles on the caps which also only exist for tank caps in that combination afaik.
Harness and backpack are the RD-54 set but in wrong colour.
Normally this comes with fitting mag and grenade pouches but here they used the simple beige canvas mag and grenade pouches that you can get easy on the web for a few bucks.
Boots are the usual russian infantry boots of that time, one would think some spetsnaz unit would have better boots already.
Camo looks like "M1988" to me, it exists in few variations but mostly wither bronish ( like in the game ) or with a more green look.
The Ukraine uses a nearly similar looking type.

The bluish type they wear later could be "Gorod" Urban camo.
The Heavy guys that looks like bomb disposal units seem to be totally fictional.
In total its all pretty wildly mixed and pretty much a fictional setup
If you want some of it try googling for Russian gear but maybe avoid the first result that comes up ;)
Here is one that already got the needed stuff:

Ughh ... not everything in the game is fictional.
Thank you to everyone else, you really helped me a lot, especially Shadow NX and Firefly26.

True, Metal Gear Solid 2 was hated by a lot MGS fans because character Raiden and other issues. Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation is considered a real classic and also is considered one of the best games in history.

Well the story, characters, and the Metal Gear units are fictional, but the weapons, uniforms and other stuff are based on real-life military equipment and experimental weapons like the railgun which the US Navy is testing right now and plans to put them on future warships and laser technology is also been underdevelopment since the mid 1970's between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Octocamo which is in Metal Gear Solid 4 is also underdevelopment and the US Army is also looking at this technology for their FCS program. I wouldn't call Kojima a nutcase even though he has some strange stories in video games like Metal Gear. However, he's one of few video game makers that makes very good story driven action games compared to other action and shooter games that have very litte story or have no story at all.

Doesn't look dissimilar to Uzbek camouflage pattern to me.
I might be a bit off on that, but look in the picture galleries, the guy who was close protection for Tommy Franks during Afghan campaign 2001/2, and met Dostum, in that library you can see a photo of Uzbek troops. Theres 3 guys in one pic, p2/3/4, walking side by side, guy on the right is Uzbeki.
You might want to check that out and see if thats your mystery cammies.
