IAI announces deal to upgrade German army's Leopard tanks
By Amnon Barzilai
Israel Aircrafts Industries yesterday announced a deal at Eurosatory to upgrade German Leopard tanks together with Rhein Metall Defense Electronic, with IAI supplying a laser-guided shell that will increase the effective range of the tank by six kilometers.
Earlier this week, Rafael announced it was forming a company in Germany that would manufacture Spike anti-tank missiles for NATO armies. The 50-50 deal was signed with Rhein Metall and Diehl. Rafael has sold more than $600 million worth of Spike missiles over the years. The new company, Euro Spike JV, could double the sales of the missile, said sources in Rafael.
The Defense Ministry is now awaiting another joint venture agreement to be signed with the French defense industries, for jointly manufacturing unmanned aircraft, while Israel Military Industries is on the verge of inking a $100 million deal with an Asian country to provide defense packages for reconnaissance ships. Arieh Mizrahi, IMI's chairman, said the company had come up with a new model for protecting the cockpit of such ships and it is putting the finishing touches on a prototype for one such ship. Once the prototype is complete, the multiyear deal will be finalized.
