View Full Version : Canada : Are you gay ? Eh?

Just 1% of Canadians say they're homo******

Are there 320,000 gay people in the country? Or is it at least 1.6 million, or perhaps closer to 3.2 million?

The controversy over how many people are gay in Canada was stirred up again yesterday as the 2003 Canadian Community Health Survey showed that 1 per cent of the population identified themselves as homo******. The gay community says the number is actually somewhere between 5 per cent and 10 per cent. (According to Statscan's most recent estimates, Canada's total population as of January, 2004, was 31.7 million.)

Statistics Canada looked at the ****** orientation of Canada for the first time in its history, surveying more than 83,000 men and women between the ages of 18 and 59. It also found that another 0.7 per cent of the population considered themselves bi******.

"I'm happy that they're finally asking the question because I think one of the big problems we've had is our invisibility, and I think it's important to have more visibility," said Laurie Arron, director of advocacy for the gay-rights group Egale Canada.

At the same time, Mr. Arron contends that the numbers are much lower than what he's seen elsewhere.

"We expected that the first time it happened. When you ask somebody to reveal something in a survey for the first time, you're going to get underreporting," he said. "Over time, as the question gets repeated, we're going to see the number go up to where most studies indicate."

The figure from Statscan comes at a time when there's an increasing debate in the federal election campaign about whether gay people should be allowed to marry.

Statscan asked people whether they considered themselves hetero******, homo****** or bi******, rather than asking respondents whether they had ever had a ****** relationship with someone of the same ***.

Quebec reported the highest number of homo******s or bi******s at 2.3 per cent, followed by British Columbia, New Brunswick and Ontario.

Statscan also said that more younger people reported they were either homo****** or bi******. Two per cent of the 18-to-34 group self-reported as being homo****** or bi******, while 1.2 per cent of those between 45 and 59 said they were homo****** or bi******.

Vincent Dale, a senior analyst at Statscan, says the overall results may have been different depending on the question.

"We know from other surveys that if we had asked, 'Are your partners of the same *** or the opposite ***' the number probably would have been higher," Mr. Dale said.

The 10-per-cent figure usually cited by the gay community comes from research by Alfred Kinsey, who in the late 1940s and early 1950s found that one in 10 men were homo******.

When a number is attached to a gay community, ideological battles emerge, said Michael Botnick, a lecturer on sociology at the University of British Columbia.

"Clearly, from a right-wing perspective, they'd like to see the numbers lower," he said. "From the more libertarian perspective, they'd like to see the numbers more accurate, or higher. So nobody's going to be satisfied."

Derek Rogusky, vice-president of family policy for Focus on the Family Canada, said the Kinsey study has been challenged many times for its poor research. The Statscan data, he said, speak volumes about the issue of same-*** marriage.

"It's not a human-rights issue. It's a public policy issue. I think that when we're talking about changing something so fundamental to our society, as I believe marriage is, just for the sake of really such a small handful of individuals, I think it causes us to stop and pause and think about that," he said. "Is this really the direction that we want to go to appease a few people?"

But Mr. Arron said it's unfair to think that people don't deserve rights because their numbers aren't large enough. "I'm Jewish. And I think it would be wrong to have the Charter protection taken away from Jewish people just because they're smaller in number. The same goes for gay and lesbian Canadians," he said.

Mr. Arron said that by asking the question of ****** orientation in surveys, it reduces the stigma attached to being gay, lesbian or bi******.

"We need to have surveys like this so our communities can be accommodated," he said.

Being anti- or pro-gay affects the birth rate? That's news to me. I mean, even if a country is institutionnally and actively anti-gay, gay men and women living there won't be like :"Hey, they must be right, let's turn straight and procreate..."

Why not let everyone live and just dump all that is anti- or pro-gay stuff, how about that?

Gaynes isn't geneticaly fixed, afirmating, advertasing, promoting that lets say in political correct way "subculture" is leading more people to choose that way of life, esspecialy those who would never try if so much emphaze wouldn't been put on that.

Jeez did they tell you all this church, if your gay you were probably born gay although some of the factors you mention above may convince those still in the closet to come out. One kid I went to school with was without a doubt going to be gay and proud when he grew up and our parents knew this before we did, when Boy George came along in the 80's that was his trigger he is now fully out.

Gays like to think they are geneticaly determined but all weel made scientific reaserch isn't prooving that :), as everywere in science there are some who want to prove gen. det. for political, financial, social reasons even everything seems othervise :). As for age when someone becames determined to be gay. I don't know, but my cusin get that idea long time after he learned how to read. :)

I love generalisations :). Homo******ism is often effect of social maladjustment not reason of it. Suporting such weakneses(by afirmating easier ways :) ) can lead to wrong decissions... In some cases reason for homo******ism also can be in chemical enviroment of fetus or other similiar in nature defects. I'm sure reason isn't one but I'm also sure genetics haven't nothing to do abouth that... There are also differences in men's and women's homo******ism... Also percent of gays who are determined by non psychological reasons is believed to be minor among declared gays.

just some thoughts p-)

Hey look, its Dr. Science.

I guess they have not taught you about the "informed argument" in school yet. Its nice to bring facts and documented proof when discussing these things. Go get some and come back and continue.

I dig gayness - mostly watching gay chicks go at it. But only the thin ones with lipstick who first complain that their boyfriends are jerks and then start pulling on each other's pajamas and then the music starts. Unfortunately, most actually look like Horatio Sans. Watching them make out can cause life-long blindness.

How can we even know that the 1% claiming to be gay are actually very, very gay? They may not even be gay enough for us to consider them gay. What if they're only a little gay..and even then only on certain days...what if they waffle back and forth, change thier minds, or if the genetically male consider themselves female (or vice versa) and then are attracted to their own *** but since they consider themselves the other ***, that's not exactly gay?

Like if a dude backdoors some poor bastard in prison, does that make him gay? Or what if you're in the shower, and the doorbell rings, and your friend is near the front door picking up a pen he dropped, and you run into him full force, naked, and your wang goes jammin' all up in there...does that make you gay?

Or if you're sitting down on a bus, and crane your head out into the isle to see out the front window, and some dude is walking up the isle, and your mouth goes directly onto his package...is that gayness? Or do you need a certificate from some organization to be certified as gay? Or is a deep and abiding love of show tunes enough?

It's kind of funny - I was watching The Birdcage the other day - the tender scene where the two guys are on the bus stop bench, talking about dividing up their stuff..and as a sign of affection they just hold hands. I commented that if Robin Williams & Nathan Lane had started a full-on make out session, complete with tongues & crotch groping, most folks would have fled the theatre desperately struggling to re-swallow their vomit.

Now if the stars were, maybe Jennifer Garner and Nichole Kidman...that would have been awesome. Ok, I believe I've pegged the offend-o-meter.

I am starting to question if you are actually THAT straight. You might be just a "little bit" straight.
