View Full Version : Quote to Ponder
"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

When he wasn't under the influence of opiates, Goering was one of the smarter members of Hitler's inner circle.
Definitely the most stylish in Hitler's entourage.

I'll say, what with that dagger, and his hand saucily placed on his hip.

He was not talking about "whatever action" he was talking about aggression and war.It is appropriate when looking at the governments actions in the last few years.History repeats and ideas do not die.

You can apply the same logic to every nation on Earth. How about the First Indochina War when France tried to take back Vietnam or the Falklands War? How about the recent Russian and Georgia conflict? Instead of trying to paint the image that the US is the big asshole of the world how about you point out the obvious: The US is just like everybody else, no better nor no worse.

It's a snappy little quote, but it doesn't really stand up to close inspection.
Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.
That's like saying - "Proof or no proof, one can always find sasquatch. That is easy. All you have to do is produce some sort of hairy body suit, and some entrails, and accuse naysayers of being "part of the conspiracy". It works the same anywhere."
The devil is in the details. He's describing a general process that depends upon two key elements which he completely fails to address- i.e. the ability to sufficiently control the means of disseminating information and the willingness of the people to defer decision-making to their government. For his quote to ring true, Californians would have to be just like North Koreans.

Again ideas do not die and the Nazis were not completely defeated they simply changed location. Ideas such as chauvinism, intolerance, conquest
and genocide are still alive and well today.

Linedoggie, INAT isn't talking about Waffen SS troops storming across the Polish and Czech borders, or Stukas divebombing terrified Slavs.
I don't think you grasp what he's trying to say: there will always be bigotry, greed, ultranationalists, and regional bullies who want to attempt to grab an extra slice of territory, at another nation's expense.
If you don't believe me, I'd be happy to give you examples.
