Around Quantico I have already seen some Marines wearing the Marpat version.

I remember paying $150ish for a gen 1 back in the day, because my unit didnt issue them yet. It was well worth it.
We didnt get issued Gortex untill 97 or so. It will probably be another 15 years before they get MARPAT parkas. Figures that all the Officers would be wearing them around at Quantico though!

Sooo, this jacket is intended for extreme cold weather AND uses Gore-Tex? Is that for real?

Well apparently some progress has been made in the composition of the Gore-Tex fabric. At least a few years ago it definitely was a no-no for winter clothing in military use... It "froze", became very stiff, made a loud rustle, and the fabric broke in heavy frost.
I'll have to settle for a standard FDF winter jacket. No Gore-Tex, still windproof, and very warm. Probably doesn't breathe a well as those Gore-Tex jackets, thought. Would have to try both to be sure...

Proud owner of Army 1st Gen ECWCS parka& Trousers; USMC 2Gen parka & trousers; USMC MARPAT APECS (ECWCS replacement) parka & trousers. Makes me cry to think what I paid for that last set -- but they are popping up on E-Bay.
BTW: the APECS is a sig. improvement over the 1st and 2Gen. Less rustle (softer outer fabric) and not as bulky, but feels as warm.
I notice the APECS owner in the photos has 3 stars on his rank tab. Probably one of the first to get one.

I know "The North Face" makes it's "Summitt Series" Jacket shells from Gore-tex. They're definitely used for severe weather mountaineering as seen in numerous pics on the web. So apparently they hold up to moisture, wind, and extreeme cold.

You would have thought that somebody would have at least told the Commandant that his collar was messed up before taking a picture. ;)
