The UN atomic agency admitted Thursday to having made a mistake in a June report on Iran that said Iran had failed to inform it about importing magnets for advanced centrifuges.
"Recently, it was brought to our attention by Iran that, during a meeting on January 28, 2004 in Tehran, the owner of a small private Iranian company who was interviewed about the P-2 (centrifuge) programme by agency inspectors mentioned ... (a) radial magnet ... provided from abroad ... This oral statement was not picked up by agency inspectors," said a statement by deputy director general Pierre Goldschmidt.
He said the IAEA "acknowledges that it omitted to take notice of the oral statement made in January with respect to the importation of magnets" but added that Iran had failed to mention in written statements made in February and March to the agency about importing P-2 components from abroad the importation of magnets.
