I feel the same way about gays in the military as I would have felt about blacks in the military three quarters of a century ago – if they want to go kill people for their country, let em. Especially if it means I don’t have to.
But the folks in the US Army weren’t on the equal rights tip, so it took until WWII before we started to see some serious efforts to get black soldiers on the front lines (besides that time in the 1800s when Denzel not only fought for his freedom in the Union Army, but also learned how to love). One of those involved the men of the 761st Tank Battalion, the first black men to enter combat duty in an armored division in The Last Good War. They were called The Black Panthers decades before the discovery of Vibranium or Huey P Newton, and they entered France with Patton in 1944 and spent the war right on the front. They were instrumental in the Battle of the Bulge, as well. And did you know that I just reviewed a DVD about a famous aspect of the Bulge? No? Why, you should go check it out, right here.
Morgan Freeman is teaming up with screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard, who wrote Ali’s story and the script for Remember the Titans. I don’t know the guy personally, but he’s coming across as kind of a greedy asshole, what with him hoarding three first names and all. The untitled film will be made for Dreamworks.
