A British warship that sank in Lake Ontario 228 years ago during the War of Independence has been found almost intact by two shipwreck hunters.

"This is the Holy Grail of Great Lakes wrecks," says Jim Kennard who, with his partner Dan Scoville, discovered the 22-gun brig-sloop HMS Ontario in deep water "somewhere" between Niagara and Rochester. "There's nothing more significant than this one."

the same team that found this one back in June has found another one this fall.

Mysterious Shipwreck Discovered in Lake Ontario

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Two explorers conducting underwater surveys of Lake Ontario have uncovered an aquatic mystery — a rare 19th-century schooner sitting upright 500 feet under the waves.

Jim Kennard and Dan Scoville located the 55-foot long dagger-board ship unexpectedly this fall using deep scan sonar equipment off the lake's southern shore, west of Rochester.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing! The state of preservation of this vessel is amazing, I wonder if it's possible to raise such a vessel, unless it's an underwater grave of course, then it shouldn't be touched. Still, at 500 ft. it isnt exceptionally deep.

From wiki [pinch of salt]:

Approximately 130 men perished with ship,[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Ontario_%281780%29#cite_note-3) comprising 60 British soldiers of the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/34th_%28Cumberland%29_Regiment_of_Foot#Revolutionary_War), a crew of about 40 Canadians and possibly up to 30 American prisoners of war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner_of_war).

their well preserved because their in fresh water. salt water plus micro organism's eat em down to the bone. usually no remains left since their all wood. as usual storms did em in on the great lakes. especially when the witch of November comes calling..........the witch (the witch) which has taken many an Iron boat as well. most notable the Iron ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald which disappeared in a storm on November 10, 1975.

Thats amazing, Surely it is still property of the Royal Navy? If so do they hold the right to claim it? Hopefully they wont take the artifacts as it is a grave but It would be nice for the Navy To send over a ship or something for a ceremony.

Beautiful pictures. Amazing to see how the mast's still standing, complete with its top, after all these years.
