THE US embassy in Harare yesterday “refused to dignify” claims by Zimbabwe’s central bank governor, Gideon Gono, that US President George Bush had offered him a senior position at the World Bank.
Gono made the astonishing claim earlier this week at the launching party for his book, Zimbabwe’s Casino Economy: Extraordinary Measures for Extraordinary Challenges. “Just as I was being dragged to the UN Security Council to be put on the sanctions list, I was offered a job by the World Bank as senior vice president,” Gono told guests at the book launch.
He said Bush’s offer was conveyed by the US ambassador to Zimbabwe, James McGee, a well-known critic of President Robert Mugabe and his regime.
But the US embassy in Harare said it would not dignify Gono’s claims by responding.
A US official told The Times: “We don’t even have the capacity to make appointments at the World Bank.”Mmmm. Gono ; World Bank. Makes perfect sense.
