With real M4s there are a wide variety of different butt stocks available. Depending on what you have, it might be necessary to change the receiver extension (aka buffer tube) in order to put a different stock on. Some manufacturers make the extensions to their own specifications, different than Milspec.

short answer: yes it can be done.
long answer: you may on not need to replace the buffer tube, as James already said

btw, does HK use milspec or commercial buffer tubes?

Early HK416 with the standard enhanced M4 style stock used a comm. tube...

The current new HK 416 stock is mil spec.

My question to you is BUT WHY?

The short answer is curiosity. The long one is that somebody asked about this issue. I donīt like the HK buttstock, well I donīt like the whole HK416 (from the aesthetic point of view), but I want to know about that fact.

it still won't make it a hk416 though.
