June 18, 2004 — PESHAWAR (*******) - A top pro-al Qaeda Pashtun tribal warrior and three of his comrades were killed by Pakistani security forces in an overnight raid in a remote tribal region bordering Afghanistan, witnesses and officials said on Friday.

Nek Mohammad, who gave shelter to al Qaeda-linked foreign militants in South Waziristan, was killed near Wana -- the main town of South Waziristan -- 400 km (250 miles) southwest of Islamabad, an intelligence official said requesting anonymity.

Pakistan has been battling al Qaeda-linked militants and tribal groups sheltering them for months as part of a campaign to rid the country of Islamic radicals.

I am not going to waste my breathe trying to explain Pastun-walli. But if this guy really is a tribal chief or leader then I expect the whole area will explode in violence soon. Violation of tribal areas and Pastun-walli are serious breaches of custom and Pashtuns don't take it lightly.
