A Plug-In Hybrid Goes on Sale, in China
By Richard S. Chang (http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/author/richard-s-chang/)

The questionable quality of Chinese cars has been the butt of many jokes, but it looks as though BYD Auto of Shenzhen, China, might be having the last laugh.
On Monday, BYD Auto began selling (http://grist.org/news/2008/12/15/Chinacar/) the first mass-produced plug-in hybrid car in the world.

Unlike conventional gas-electric hybrids, the F3DM can be charged from a wall outlet. It has a range of about 60 miles on a full battery charge. Its lithium-ion batteries can be fully recharged in as little as seven hours, said BYD, which stands for Build Your Dreams. And the batteries can be 50 percent recharged at a special station in 10 minutes.

The car also has a 1-liter gas engine, which, according to media reports (Treehugger (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/03/byd-f3dm-plug-in-electric-hybrid-china.php) and Autoblog Green (http://www.autobloggreen.com/tag/BYD/)), recharges the batteries to extend the range. BYD Auto only began building cars in 2003.

For those of you keeping score, BYD Auto has beaten General Motors and Toyota in bringing a plug-in hybrid to market. The Chevrolet Volt goes on sale at the end of 2010. Toyota is planning a plug-in hybrid, also for 2010 (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/14/business/14plug.html).

“The development of electric-powered vehicles is the best way for the Chinese auto industry to surpass other leading countries,” Wang Changfu, BYD’s founder and chairman, told reporters (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601080&sid=a4pB1zdYV_SU&refer=asia) at an unveiling ceremony in Shenzhen.

Mr. Wang added that the F3DM, with a price of about $22,000, initially will be targeted at government agencies and corporate customers. (In a surreal event, Mr. Wang drove (http://jalopnik.com/344806/detroit-auto-show-world-exclusive-surreal-illegal-test-drive-of-chinese-hybrid-through-cobo-arena) the concept version of the car on the Cobo Center floor during the 2008 Detroit auto show.)

BYD Auto was founded by Mr. Wang in 1995 (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-chinacar13-2008dec13,0,1669363.story) as a manufacturer of cellphone batteries. Even though the company only began building cars in 2003, it has become one of the major players in the Chinese auto industry.

According to The Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122934333210506567.html?mod=googlenews_wsj), Mr. Wang told reporters that the company plans to sell 350,000 total vehicles in 2009, which is nearly twice the number sold in 2008. The company plans to launch four new vehicles next year, including an electric car.

In September, Warren Buffett bought 9.9 percent (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/30/business/worldbusiness/30battery.html?scp=2&sq=byd%20auto&st=cse) of the firm, which may signal BYD’s entrance into the United States market in the near future.

Mr. Wang said at the time: “If BYD were to enter the North American market, Mr. Buffett’s investment would enhance the BYD brand name.”

Video of the F3DM, in the video it claims the sunroof is a hybrid sunroof/solar panel that will recharge and power the vehicle while it is in motion.

Another interesting feature is the accl/deceleration, where the 1.0ltr engine kicks in if you want to accelerate and shuts off other times. During deceleration the energy generated from engine braking is used to reverse the electrical motor ie. it recharges the batteries from the deceleration.

This is gloabalization: A newcomer can already come up with the newest technologies - old champions have to watch out. This Chinese company just need to hire some good designers & marketing experts & improve quality control and ...bang.. then they are more than a serious competitor - especially for the Big Three.

Oh la-di-fricken-da. Beaten them to market with what? A rattlebox built by a battery maker with absolutely no track record of building cars? I'd be willing to wager that the car has virtually no safety features - because they aren't required in China and they cost money and add weight. What's the warranty like? Has it been durability tested for millions of miles all over the world the way major players have to test their products? OR have they slapped it together to build a press release and gather investor money? GM/Ford/Toyota etc. don't have the luxury of building something like that - they'd be buried under a mountain of litigation. Once we have some independent road tests verifying manufacturer performance claims & handling dynamics, I'll be a lot more impressed.

I doubt Warren Buffet would invest in a "rattle box". We laughed at Japanese cars as I remember, for a while. American industry had better pull there head out before it is too late.

"Rattle box[es]," can make you a lot of money in third world countries with very low to non-existing consumer protection standards. Get it certified by the competent agency in any major developed country and I'd be extremely impressed.

Well I'd say that Buffet would invest in the worst ****box imaginable if he thought it would make money. And yeah, you're right, we laughed at Japanese cars ...when they deserved to be laughed at. But then I also laughed at Yugos and Dewoos.

I'm not scoffing at the Chinese building a plug-in hybrid. I'm pointing out that it's in no way comparable to something they could hope to sell elsewhere. Saying BYD "has beaten General Motors and Toyota" is a bit fallacious since GM & Toyota would be run out of town on a rail if they came to market with something like this. I wish them luck but I'm just asking for a bit of perspective.

To illustrate my point somewhat...here's a quick blurb about the first Chinese 4x4 imported into Europe;

"The two-ton 4x4 scored zero stars in crash tests last week by the ADAC, the German automobile club, which carries out tests for Euro NCAP. “It had a catastrophic result,” said a spokesman for the ADAC. “In our 20-year history no car has performed as badly.

Testers calculated that a driver would be unlikely to survive a head-on collision at 40mph, and in a side-on collision at 30mph the driver would suffer severe head and chest injuries due to a lack of side protection.
