VLADIVOSTOK, Russia (*******) - Russian riot police detained at least 100 people on Sunday protesting against government measures linked to the economic crisis, a crackdown that highlighted official sensitivity to growing hardship.
Riot police broke up an unsanctioned rally organized against new car import duties, kicked a protester as he was being held and hurled a cameraman's gear to the ground.
Police used a loudhailer to order demonstrators to go home as they gathered near the city center, and the OMON riot police started snatching people after an uneasy 30-minute standoff.
Local media said 100-200 of the 500 participants were detained but authorities declined to confirm this figure.
Further protests were due to take place across Russia on Sunday against car import tariffs, which are being raised to prop up struggling domestic car producers and discourage Russians from buying second-hand vehicles.
They are particularly popular in Russia's Far East which is a major importer of used Japanese cars and political analysts say the protests are the first serious challenge by Russians to measures directly linked to the financial crisis.
The global economic crisis has battered Russian financial markets and oil, a chief source of foreign currency revenue, has plunged from $147 to under $40 per barrel in six months.
Protestors in the Pacific port city of Vladivostok, 6,000 km (3,750 miles) east of Moscow, are urging Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to reverse the car import tariff hike, which they say will destroy livelihoods.
"For me, the car business is the only way to support my family," said car dealer Nikolai Kostalenko who took part in the protest.
Nikolai Markovtsev, a local parliamentarian with the pro-Kremlin Fair Russia party, said protesters were seeking to protect their jobs.
"The government has shown how it interacts with the people. They should talk to people, not twist their arms," he said.
The car duty is largely a defensive measure to protect Russia's domestic motor industry, which is largely based around the Volga region cities like Togliatti, home of the Soviet-era Lada cars, several time zones to the west.

outcome: ~40 people with different (to heavy) injuries, broken limbs etc, reporters from 5-6 media grups detained and beaten (one of them in reanimation now).

Why are those mass media blaming OMON in such actions?! :cantbeli:
They received an order, and they must do what they are ordered!
Becides,
IMHO, though OMON is supposed as anti-riot and anti-criminal special police unit - but it is NOT. After active use OMONs in both chechen wars - we have mostly battle units, got used intensive fightig to death with chechen terrorists.

So its perfectly acceptable for you to deploy intense fighting units to crack down against peaceful, unarmed Russian civilian protesters??

Interesting Video.
From My Observations of it, I noticed two things that stood out.
1- The Crowd of Protestors seemed Peaceful enough. not throwing things or running amok
2- I didnt see One Omon? officer giving anyone a beating. Detainees were physically marched to the holding truck or picked up physically.
I see no evidence of any Police Brutality, nor Crowd acting Violently.

Bear in mind one thing, there is nothing one-sided. In 2009 there will be a tidal wave of used cars, trucks, tractors etc. confiscated by banks worldwide, mostly in G7, because of unpaid credits, and they will be sold practically for ANY price, and if it will hit Russia in full, we can kiss goodbye our automobile production, even crappy as it is. And it means that 2-3 mln people will loose they jobs, we have trouble already with gastarbeiters from former SU who were practically kicked out from construction sites and (let's face it - slave jobs) with no means of survival, add 2 mln of full citizens to cauldron, and we have total FUBAR on our hands. On the other hand letting Far East to hang dry is FUBAR too, and Govt must pump money in there. So the situation is "Between rock and a hard place". And do not forget that colour revolutions also started small, and god save us all, if Russia will get one.
As for sending hardcore war vets to smash riots. Thirst thing is, that sending riot cops to hardcore war is wrong, but Russia don't have the luxury to print money out of it's ass, and have to operate with what it have.

it's not about cars now. it's about stupid government moves in a time of crisis and inability to make decisions that let people survive. people want to expain our mistrust to government and calls for impeachment (by referendum).
oh and about OMON moves - it seems that we're lucky to have that meeting there, or they will just beat random people on the streets to detain their 200 "protestors".

I agree, but they could forbit right-hand cars only, and not **** people lives with tariffs. I was 18 when i sold first car (E38) in Russia imported from Germany. It was ****ing good money for a student! When import tarrif was rised for older models, it was hard to buy a good car for me, then drive it to russia and sell. I read that buying cars in Vladivostok was kind of dangerous - various bandits hunting for owners of new cars and forcing them to pay "tax" were common on the long way back to central Russia. Beating or killing happened on a regular basis. Is that true?
What surprise me is that Russian Govt is taking some steps to prevent crisis enraging Russians, yet for example Russian Lukoil in Poland acts as if nothing happened - it takes a very aggresive stance and sells oil cheaper than others despite of buying it at the same price as them. Any logic in this?

Nalogs are quite offen. But you pay for a place for your car... and your safety... Same in most of europe too. But car sellers sometimes are same bandits. Other thing is when potential buyer asks for test drive and takes with him friends...:-*$
btw, the wehrmacht received orders too..
If you mean WWII then the whermacht were racist scum who enjoyed killing slavs because they were racist and believed they were doing the world a favour.
This has nothing to do with the German army or WWII.
So its perfectly acceptable for you to deploy intense fighting units to crack down against peaceful, unarmed Russian civilian protesters??
The US was happy to use National Guard Units against Vietnam protesters.
Is that not the same thing?
why don't you just deport the protestors to the gulag and shoot them as enemies of the people?
Why don't you just let people do what they like when told by a policeman to do something?
that's actually a widespread myth. and shows that you not driving right-wheeled car (bc it's a nonsence).
Try safely pulling out of a carpark on the side of the road with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car. Nice to be able to step into the drivers seat directly from the footpath, but your view of traffic is aweful and you basically have to creep out till you think you are able to go and then floor it out.

^^ Don't know about Vladivostok, but in Moscow those things happen. Ofcourse, instead of being killed, you might find your car damaged. Bandits hunting for owners thing is absurd. It's opposite i would say. :D Ofcourse, when you don't know whom and where to sell your car, you might get in trouble everywhere, not only in Russia. As i mentioned, most dangerous thing is when dark ass guy with his friends ask for test drive. One thing, they drive like maniacs, other thing, you feel pressure.

Well, actually they already do some competitive buses, not to the level of Mers or Neoplan, but on the level of they main competitors in Russia - used Korean like - KIA, Daewoo etc, as for trucks, my 1-st was SuperMaz, it was a sturdy reliable machine, but at some point you understand, that if you take care of your prostate, your prostate will take care of you, what is good for 20 y/o conscript, is not the same for 30-40-50 y/o fart. If guys in Maz and Kamaz will improve on ergonomics, i will be happy to oblige. As for private cars, well i would like to see them kicked in the nuts for now, and it must be done repeatedly, untill those guys will get they head out of they ass. Understand me right, i feel yoor pain, coz i'm end user of used foreign machinery. But in real world situation is grim.

Very commonly used practice, during the martial law era in Poland, 1981- 1982, the polish ZOMO, equivalent of the OMON, they sent diffrent units to other provinces so that the people that they were suppressing were not relatives. Think that this was the same reason for this action in Russian.

I had to drive a left hand drive wrangler on left side drive roads... That was weird, almost got killed as soon as I started driving by simply trying to pull out of the parking lot on the stop sign (was looking the wrong way when pulling out). Since the car was normal but the roads were not, I kept on forgetting where I need to be, especially when having to do a right turn I had to stop and think about which side I need to be on and which ways do I have to check for oncoming cars...

my statement was exagerated of course. It was meant as a hyperbole, because after WW2 nobody wanted to be responsible, everybody "just got orders from somewhere else".
I don't like the shifting responsibility and card blanche mentality some people have. If they have the order to stop the protest - Ok - but it is in their hands whether they beat the **** out of the protestors or not. but that's another story.
The other thing is - why comparing this acutally to events in the USA? Unfortunately the USA cannot be a good example in such issues.
Police brutality is nothing extraordinary there.

You can tell a civilian to stop protesting and go home. Odds are they will not do it. You can shoot them. Or you can use physical force. If they resist then of course you have to subdue them. If they resist and try to "subdue" back... well you can work it out. I doubt the orders were "beat the sht out of these people". Normal procedure is to form a line and try to identify the agitators... the leaders who are stirring things up. You send a small group of police out to get those guys and drag them off to be arrested. They will generally have some form of protection organised. It is the same everywhere on Earth.

The US example represents the west. Like it or not. If the US is a democracy and not a police state. It is useful to compare.

They were just standing there... They are Russian citizens and its their city and they have a right to be there to view the New Year tree, judging from the video supplied they did not provoke the police, the were not causing a public disturbance. But I guess since they didn't have any pro-putin banners the "public" media will ferment news of something in the lines of that "they are greedy pro-western elements that put their own interests above that of Russia thus undermining Russian pass to glorious future..."
If its public disturbances as what is happening in Greece right now, where crowds are destroyed public and private property, throwing stones and petrol bombs I'm all for the use of OMON tactics, but here people were arrested and dragged away for simply being in a public place.

Well, the citizens of Togliatti are surely thinking that russian government takes their interests into account.
Infact the decision of either leaving domestic industry without support in those hard times and having hundred thousands of GAZ/VAZ/KamAZ etc employees loosing their jobs or increasing customs fees to make foreign cars economically less feasible then domestic, is quite easy.
If nobody will buy russian cars the producers will not have the money to develop better vehicles and completely loose their market shares.

Putin will 'win' the next elections regardless if you like him or not. About '70 % of people will vote for him'.
BTW,
Who is EdRo?
So by those single quotations I take it that you're implying that the entire electoral system in Russia is rigged, that all the opinion polls showing 60-70% popularity ratings for Putin are all wrong and that he would actually lose the next elections against the much more popular... uh.... oh damn :bash:
Also asch it seems was talking just as much about parliamentary and regional elections (gubernatoral) as presidential, where ruling parties have greater chances of loosing power as compared to the presidential election.

You misunderstood me. It's a reference to Medvedev, who won the election with the approval rate of 70% because Russian specialists came to conclusion "it's bad to achieve an approval rate of 90+% in civilised countries".
I am not denying Putin or Medvedev would win an election without cheating.
The same about Lukashenka - Polish specialists claim he could easily win an election without cheating. However it's commonly known he cheats.

I think her and Condi would really hit it off. Both are angry lesbians, not so much because they want to be angry lesbians, but b/c no man would ever touch THAT. Both are Russophobes - one by choice, and the other's job description requires it. It could be a start of something beautiful
Polish magazine cover - BAD taste. No insight, no relevence, just plain offensive (even more so with holocaust pictures). Pasting Hitler's face into any person you disagree with shows no imagination, no respect, and no sense of history - it's only purpose is to push a point by causing really nagtive emotions in people (as opposed to engaging the brain). No editor in a respectable magazine would ever run something like that...but i guess they have different standards in Polish press. Here is an counterexample of what i consider a really good taste:

Even though its supposed to be a SWAT analogue because OMON stands for "Special Purpose Police Unit", they are used as combat units in places like Chechnya. So their attitude and aggressiveness are on the level of dealing with enemy combatants, not Russian civilians.

"ELEGIA O...
I wyszedłeś, jasny synku, z czarną bronią w noc,
i poczułeś, jak się jeży w dźwięku minut - zło.
Zanim padłeś, jeszcze ziemię przeżegnałeś ręką.
Czy to była kula, synku, czy to serce pękło?"

Again... You took his too literally. This is not article itself but a kind of topical written by columnist who share his own opinion. The aim wasn't to discredit Russia but indicate disproportions between political ambitions and social problems.
The same like in Poland. We export our military worldwide ;) and some key internal problems are not solved yet.
Anyway, in every exaggeration you can find a core of truth... regrettably.

Hehe. When, let's say, British newspaper writes something unpleasant about Russia, it tries to bring portion of feces kinda witty and on a silver plate, but in case of Russo-Polish, manure-throwing contest, "Shltball" must be the size of "Sputnik" and you must hear splash in Warsaw, when it lands in Moscow, same goes vice-versa. It's normal thing - favorite passtime in both countries, when not moaning and groaning about they own govts. I personally, when not b/tching about - "How our all-caring government invented new, ninja ways, of getting in my ass without lube", love to indulge myself in never ending "Hohlosratch", it's a good way to lift morale, and healthy trolling in one pack.
