Hey guys, i noticed Springfield Armory stopped making M1 Garand's earlier this year or Last year. I want to purchase one, so i'm wondering if any of you fine folk would know a manufacturer that still produces them or would i have to go custom shop?
thanks and appreciation in advance. -Tom.

FYI, Springfield didn't really make any new parts on those M1s, IIRC they only made the barrel and two other parts. The rest came from parts kits, and they were starting to run low so they stopped making them to have them available as spares for customer service purposes. So those Fulton Armory Garands would be the same quality, probably a little better.
However, it's really hard to mess up a Garand when you're using USGI parts and any competent gunsmith. Although those prices are a little high, you could use m1garand.com (http://m1garand.com) and get quality guns for a couple hundred less, meaning more $$$ for ammo, meaning more fun.

Good stuff, thanks! i did not know that. Are the Recievers with SA stamped on them any better than Fulton regarding Fit and Finish?
Anyone know *other* Manufactures?

Civilian Marksmanship Program, truly excellent thing.
You can Get M1 Garands, Carbines, sometimes M1917's, '03s from the US Govt.
Ammo, parts as well

That's your cheapest bet, and also probably the safest as qualifying for them=shipped right to your door.
Oh and it's illegal to buy one with out join the "M1 Garand Nuts" user group here on mp.net.

Well an Original GI Garand Reciever is Forged from a Billet of steel.
Springfield Armory inc's recievers are like their M1A's Investment cast
Edit: have you tried on Culvers shooting pages asking about where to get one?

Allegedly, an investment cast reciver can flex a minute amount. though you'd be hard pressed to find any practical difference other than cosmetic. The REAL Springfield Armory, Winchester produced Garands were Hammer Forged and Machined from
For what it's worth (remember they have a bias towards selling original)

Remember that for 40 years Springfield Armory Inc. has manufactured tens of thousands of Investment cast M1A's

so , what i'm seeing here, the Casting might have imperfections? and the Forged is old school cut down and milled to perfect spec? the casting just looks smoother?

Might as well get a USGI Garand from the CMP. Only gonna be worth more money as time goes on and you con't go wrong with their Service Grades...

Springfield, Harrington and Richardson, International Harvester, Winchester, almost any company that produced machinery or firearms was hired to make M1 Garand rifles.

will USGI Springfields have those makers stamped on them?

Yep, the M1 Garand will have the markings on the end of the receiver behind the rear sight. It'll look like this:
U.S. RIFLE
CAL. 30 M1
SPRINGFIELD
ARMORY
(Serial number here)
Where "Springfield Armory" can be something else like "H&A Armory" depending on who made the receiver for it.

Yes, they have a category like that.

By the way, the ONLY manufacturers of Garands in WW2 were the Governments Springfield Armory in Massachusetts and Winchester.
Winchester also was very hesitant during it's contract to update the rifle as the government did without getting additional funds per rifle. A June 1944 Garand has many small improvements an Winchester from the same month wouldnt have. Later Arsenal re builds brought these Rifles to then current standards. There is a whole sub category in Garand collecting for these rifles, and other odddities. I happen to only like the SA WW2 rifles as opposed to Post war rifles.
Marlin made some Barrels during the war for Garands. Some M1's were sent to the British(the UK No. 6 Army Commando was issued Garands for Op Torch. and No. 1 & 2 Cdo. used them when they went to Burma). The M1D didnt see Combat duty before the end of the war, but did serve later. M1C's were production rifles sent to Civilian Firms for modification for Scopework. There is no such animal as a "Tanker Garand" except as a selling point, the Jungle warfare experiments called it the T26.

I reccomend Scott A. Duff's books on the Garand, as they get into the weeds over details of the rifles production.

i'm starting to wonder. this might be a stupid question. if they do ban semi automatics. and raise ammo taxes unjustly. would it even be worth investing if i cant even use it? how would such a ban affect the CMP?
