Big F'n Gun

I know that BFG has been used in description of various guns. But I think this one takes the cake.

Silencer for stealth. This coupled with sub-sonic rounds makes this one heck of a weapon system.

That is a picture of a device used to minimize acoustic signature around a training area in Germany.

It has been posted on militaryphotos.net before.

Interesting vid but I doubt it is completely real.

From memory this 280mm gun fires its nuke round over about 15km... and avoids destroying itself in the process. I doubt the shell in question covered 15km in the few seconds of flight in the vid.

It is probable they edited out some flight time.

Uhh, hate to break it to you but this is not a "silencer" for active duty use as it would be one of the most useless things you could wish for......if you understand anything about artillery on the battlefield that is hehehehe.....

In fact, this "silencer" is used in areas where there is training near to civlian centers so that it doesnt bother them..........

In addition, "sub sonic" artillery plus a sliencer is kinda a cool idea but very limited in its implementation and usefullness.....Most modern counterbattery systems are based on radar and having the round be "subsonic" would make no difference in hiding the artillery system from counterbattery fire.........not to mention that the most effective counter to counterbattery is mobility (in other words "shoot n' scoot the hell out of the area") this "silencer" would basically not be able to move fast enough and would likely get about one or two (if lucky) shots off against an American system before being wiped out............In addition to this, that "silencer" could be spotted by JSTARS from a mile away and would bring every attack and bomber aircraft within 100 miles right to it!!!!!

In addition, artillery usually prefers to fire form such long range that you cant hear the shot anyways so a silencer is useless in a combat situation.......

One of my buddies is a forward observer for the Marines.....He is sniper trained but right now his main job is to call in artillery on enemy units...including mortars..........

One thing he said is that ounce artillery fires, if there is any threat of effective counterbattery fire, it will usually reposition (just like a sniper repositions after his shot if necesarry) to avoid counter fire........

So, instead of a silencer, I would rather have a big ass gun with as long a range as possible and the fastest possible speed and most mobility possible so I could shoot from long distance and then move the HELL OUTTA DODGE.......

Most modern counterbattery systems are based on radar

Whilst a lot are, as they are active systems and therefore themselves comparativly easy to locate and put out of action, they also rely on 'shoot and scoot'. Incedently, as they have simlar radiation characteristics to SAM fire direction systems they can cause a few worries for the fast jet boys when they are switched on.

Sound ranging systems are still very widely used.

You obviously can't tell tongue and cheek from fact and fiction. Thank you for informing me about all those cool things... BTW judging from your perceptions you haven't worked much with JSTARS have you?
