I am heading out soon to buy a 15 GB iPod soon. It is worth the money right? (300$) For those that own them or know a good amount about them, what are your thoughts on it? Also, what is a good case to buy. And should I buy it from Best Buy or the Apple store?
I have a PC. Any other things you can add, please do! Thanks! :D

Dell has a new Dell Digital Jukebox. It holds mp3s and also picks up any radio station nearby. It's also about $100 cheaper than an iPod.

I've got one from when they first came out I've got plenty of mp3s on there about 1800 and i think it's only 5GB. You don't really need that much memory, it's just a way of making you buy a more expensive one. Other than that they're definately worth it.

I got IPOD 3rd generation (newest) 10 GB.
Its an awesome playre IF you are the type of person who listens to a LOT of music. In other words, if you have 5 or 6 songs you listen to, you are overpaying for extra space.. On the other hand if you got multiple albums of edonkey, and want to have all 20 of em with you, then Ipod is the way to go.
And yes, you NEED a case. www.iskin.com is by far the best solution i am aware off. Thats what I have.
Hope this helps.

My job gave me one and its definitely worth the gift. ;) I don't listen to much music as I used to. I primarily use my ipod as an external hardrive taking work to and from home. Ah, and the occasional bootleg from various CompUSA showrooms, what?

iPod? NO!
Buy an iRiver, they're the only ones with a GOOD sound quality. Don't believe me? Fine, find the frequency responses for iPod and iRiver. You'll see.
Or better yet, listen to both yourself! And when you get one, whatever it is that you get, scrap the headphones that come with it, and buy some good ones.

Good one's are:
Koss, the plug (cheap, can be modified to fit perfectly)
Sony, EX71 (good, balanced sound)
Shure, E3 (pricey, but worth it)

:P

iPods sound quality is outstanding. And the included earphones are actually really highend (compared to regular sony crappos), and have nice and proportinal bass (especially for earphones)

What say you, Russian American? p-) I bet you haven't listened to an iRiver? I heard they blow the iPods out of the water.

I got a 40gb Creative Zen Jukebox £120 cheaper than an 40gb iPod but that might just be here.

I heard some bad things about iRiver regarding its reliability, but thats besides the point. Do you REALLY think a few extra Hz going to make a difference in your everyday listening experience?
The iPod soundquality is definitely on par with a top-notch Sony cd player (and thats impressive for an mp3 player) and it can also get pretty loud, if you are into loud music, or listen to it in a loud environment. A lot of other, cheaper mp3, players are very quiet.
But, maybe you are right, iRiver could've improved in their latest version.

IPOD is good, but there are better ones out there.

I have a friend with that, and I would have to say that iPod is definitely superior in nearly every aspect. Although if you really need to refrain from spending the xtra 70 bucks, its a pretty acceptable alternative.
In my opinion though, if you are going to spend 200-200 on an mp3 player, it better be the best. :D

Get the iPod. Everyone I know has one and they are quite nice in terms of cool factor and ease of use. I don't listen to music though...

Well, if you're a typical guy with ears full of crap, can't hear the difference between, say B&W's nautilus, and your monitor's built-in speakers, use the "quality" headphones that come with i.e. iPod, and if you're not a hifi-person like me, then no. It won't make a difference.

The iPod soundquality is definitely on par with a top-notch Sony cd player

What a load of crap! :cantbeli:
No it isn't. Period. I suggest you take some good headphones, and make an ABX-test with both. After that you can come back and we'll see if you still say that.

True. Many cheap players have really poor amplifier components, and if you try to use any less sensitive headphones, they run out of juice. Both iPod and iRiver don't suffer from that problem, thought.

But hey, it's a free world! I'd choose iRiver, despite the fact that iPod looks far better. (It's in my pocket anyway ;))

**NOTE**
It is very subjective thing what we consider to "sound good". It basically can't be said that "this sounds the best", it depends very much on the person listening; his ears, his taste of music, how much real music has he heard, the equipment he usually listens music with etc etc...
So for one person an iPod can sound absolutely superb, while another instantly notices the dampened bass-frequencies.

Well I guess. But for the 95% of the people who will stick to the included earphones anyway, iPod is definitely as good as it gets.
Also, if you are an audiophile, chances are even 320 kbps mp3s sound like radio static anyway, so you shouldnt even be arguing about anything involving mp3s. :P

Yes, sadly you are right about that 95%, iPod is good, but not the best money can buy. Although is strongly suggest that people buying it should get decent headphones. ;)

And yeah, I probably shouldn't be arguing about mp3's :D
But since I hardly want to carry my turntable with me, I choose mp3's. And 256-320kbps high quality mp3's begin to be hard to distinguish from CD’s.

The biggest problem with those is the dynamic compression, along with dampening of highest and lowest frequencies. But hey, since the modern music is far too often spoiled by too hard compression on the CD itself anyway...

Also, it should be noted that a lot of modern music (namely rap) is not really about musical details, so anything that can do OK mid-frequencies is more or less sufficent.
