Pyongyang wants envoy at Obama’s Jan. inauguration

North Korea last month said it wanted to send a representative to the Jan. 20 inauguration of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama. But Washington has so far remained reluctant to accept the request, according to South Korean government sources.

“The North, through its United Nations mission office in New York, conveyed the message that it can send Vice Foreign Minister Kim Gye-gwan as a representative to the inauguration ceremony,” said the source. The message was first delivered to The Korea Society, an U.S. nonprofit organization that promotes Korea-U.S. relations, and was later delivered to the Obama transition staff....

Not sure how to interpret this given Pyongyang's track record but perhaps it no longer wants to be a part of the Axis of Evil?

I bet they'd bring some great Kim Chi...mmmm...kim chi....

Seriously, I hope the North Koreans can come. This cold war mentality has got to stop. And the fact that they want to come is a sign of hope. The war was so long ago. Its time to mend fences.

This is NK's attempt at gaining some sort of PR from this stint. They are not serious about re-thinking their attitude. Barack HUSSEIN Obama, Im sure, will be receptive to it.

Why not? What possible harm can come from letting one of their representatives attend the inauguration?

Maybe our Dear Leader Kim wants a new i-Touch p-). I would say, "sure, why not?" I don't know if there is any negatives, but there is a possibility of a Plus. I don't know what the US has to loose.

Pretty shrewd, imo.
They're trying to capitalize on the expected Obama detente in relation to 'rogue states', hoping that the new administration will play ball with them if they appear to be cooperative. Personally, I don't see any reason to soften relations with the DPRK and hope the envoy is turned away.

Wow, some of these responses are pathetic. How will the Global population ever enjoy peace with the War mentality. We can't always chase after the Cold War mentality, it proved nothing. let them come, if its just a PR stunt, that's what it is, and we'll move on. No harm will come from one NK rep showing up in the US. Liberal or Conservative, we need to stop the Warhawk mentality, and press for resolution.

Relax being a newbie you will get use to people having a very polarized point of view, (dammed internet generals) sort of shoot first never mind, nothing wrong with it, but stick around, sometimes the truth is evidence to itself, and then just enjoy the spin,,,

**** no first of all there are American citizens who want to go who cannot. Im no Obama supporter but citizens of our own country should have a higher priority then someone from a diffrent country (espcially one that has been belligerent to us in the past.)

I'm sure he'll manage to restrain himself from partaking too heavily of the Imperialist's buffet.

1st the North Koreans will want to be seated in the front row. Then they must be seated next to the Palistinian representative. Then they will demand to have Syria seated on their other side, with Iran behind them. When this is refused, they will claim western hegemony and an aggressive act of the imperialistic running dogs against the North Korean people. They will threaten to boycott the Inugruation, and demand fuel and food shipments to the North as a means of reparation from the west for the suffering they have had to endurep-)

Not really surprising, Barack Hussein Obama has sold himself to the world as the Anti-Bush, therefore all manner of Tyrants they think they will have a free pass from him. Who Knows he may give them what they want, time will tell.

Let the envoy come, wine and dine him. As they say, keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. Dialogue has to start somewhere, right? This is a perfect opportunity to show soft power.

But they should leave him pretty down the list.

Or they will find out that they have been taken for a ride. p-) Dialogue is not weakness, and perhaps Obama's trying to tip the scales somewhat away from them.

The North Koreans probably want to see if they have a sucker in the White House this time around. Kind of test-the-waters. Personally, without a revolution from within, I don't see the situation in North Korea being any different four years down the track. Except maybe they'll have more nukes unless someone does an airstrike.

Kim won't be over. He won't fly (remember his 82-million dollar train he used to go to Russia in 2001?) and he gets seasick. So, until the Bearing Strait Bridge is built, the Kimmizoid won't be coming to this continent.

We should send in a special forces unit using the same gear as the north korean military and try to start a civil war there, because there is a limited on how ****ty you can treat your people.
but the royal family should be publicly tortured and exicuted.
