Jump to the 1:50 mark to watch the landing happen and watch the far left part of the screen.
Still amazing to see it happen.

damn, amazing it didnt come apart.

AFAIK, planes are built to be able to land on water and to stay on surface for a certain limited time.

Aircraft that have air pressurization systems are pretty much air tight, so they are naturaly pretty good at floating. Im still amazed that the aircraft stayed together. It seems like it turned a little bit during the landing to point towards that first camera. Im sure that control column was all the way back as much as the crew could pull on it.

I agree with this statement but would like to add the phrase "under ideal conditions" and say that pilot should get the medal of honor (or the civi equiv) for a landing like that.

The wreckage of US Airways Flight 1549 was lifted from the waters of the Hudson River in lower Manhattan late Saturday. Michael Appleton for The New York Times

just out of interest, whats the current like in that river? fast or slow? and what direction? The lower Hudson is a tidal estuary so the current speed and direction are variable with the tides. Heard one of the Harbor Unit divers say 2-3kts at the time. The aircraft itself drifted about 3.75 miles down river in only a few hours before being secured to shore in lower Manhattan.

^ Sorry, got that photo from the NY Times. That's the only size they had. But here's a slideshow with additional pictures: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2009/01/18/nyregion/0118-PLANE_index.html

The structure seems to have been slightly bent right under the ID# of the plane...
Looks like there is even a "crack" a few feet to the bottom right of that number.

It probably came cose to breaking in half.
