Yesterday i was at the pool function with my Marine recruiter, and we were learning about the about the m16a2, and we talked about how to take it apart all the parts what they do. then they were talking about range qualification and when in standing position that making little figure 8's helped keep your shot straight because its almost impossible to keep it completely straight so you time it when it hits the center of the 8. I was wondering if you guys knew of any other tricks on rage qualification. I was also told to put something in your left breast pocket and to push it up and rest the rifle on it. Also for kneeling to rest your triceps on your knee same for sitting.
sorry if in wrong section

Don't worry, the DIs and Primary Marksmanship Instructors are going to have lots of techniques for you very soon!

yes you will get plenty of instruction from pros so dont get too worried about it
i used to raise the barrel high, elbow tucked in gut and come down slow until im about at the black in the sight pic, then squeeze
but like i said, if you listen and learn, you'll do fine
good luck to you
I like just to raise the gun upwards straight to target and squeeze when it is there. The longer you wait, more the hand starts to shake.

like everyone else said, you'll get plenty of time to work on your technique before you put the 1st round downrange. pay attention to what the PMIs tell you and you'll be fine. plenty of recruits that have never fired a rifle before MCRD are able to shoot expert. good luck

I'd say it's better to go in with an open mind, and learn it their way, then already have a preset way of doing things, including any bad techniques.
IIRC, it take roughly 3,000 repetitions to produce competent muscle memory, but twice that to erase bad muscle memory and bad techniques with good ones.
The last thing any instructor in a basic training environment wants to hear is: "But I learned a different way back home."

I've never ever hit anything else other than black or '5' in the standing.

You can get a low marksmanship score on the known distance range and still come out as expert if you do the combat qual excelent.

That must be some kind of Army talk, because I don't know what you said.

A little a year ago the Marine Corps combined both table one and table two for the rifle range. A few months ago they also allowed us to use RCOs for the rifle range.

****, so they went from a point system to a hit or miss system, then back to a point system?

Since I've been in it's always been the points system, and as of October 2007 they added an extra 100 points for the table two course of fire. Marksman is 250-279, sharpshooter is 280 to 304, and expert is 305 to 350.
