On the last full working day of the outgoing Bush Administration (Friday, January16th) Condoleeza Rice, signed a Bilateral Agreement with
Israel, that will commit the United States (and partners) to strengthen support for the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Shortly after that signing
ceremony, the Foreign Secretary for Israel, Tzipi Livni, assembled a press conference to deliver the following statement;
“ A war against terror doesn’t end with a peace process, shaking hands in the White House.”
This is a calculated insult toward the Clinton Administration which supervised the Oslo Accords (with a handshake on the White House lawn)
between Israeli and Palestinian leaders. It is worth mentioning that the person who will take office as Foreign Secretary, is Hillary Clinton.
The Oslo Accord provided a framework which gave Palestinian National Authority partial control over the West Bank and Gaza. In recognition
of this achievement, Shimon Peres, Yasser Arafat, and Yitzhak Rabin, were awarded the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize. Near the close of that year,
Prime Minister of Israel, Yitzhak Rabin, was assassinated in Tel Aviv at the hand of a lone gunman, a right wing, Orthodox Jew, who was
opposed to the Oslo Accord. From that moment, the separation of Palestinian people became the focus of Israel’s internal security policy.
This time last year, the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt was breached, temporarily, by a Palestinian population unable to endure
the stranglehold of Israel’s blockade. As the humanitarian crisis intensified, Israel judged the time was right to launch an unconditional war.
Last week, the military phase of Israel’s assault on Gaza concluded with destruction of the main warehouse in the United Nations compound.
The food and medical humanitarian aid lost, were intended to relieve the suffering in Gaza. Israel congratulates itself on a job well done. The
Oslo Accords may have required further development ( they were far from satisfactory to both sides) however, at least mistakes were being
made in a good direction. Israel is no longer fit to qualify as a UN Member State. The United Nations came into being against the background
of post second world war reconstruction. Three years later (1948) Palestinians were terrorised from their homes, and their land, at the point
of a gun. Do the Israelis have any intention to stop violence against the Arabs? Fifteen years after the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin,
his successors have established a walled containment of Palestinians on the West Bank, and a prolonged blockade of Palestinians in Gaza.
These restrictions (imposed by a United Nations Member State) have created a humanitarian crisis. Israel never exercise restraint, and always
exceeds acceptable boundaries. It is time for the International Community to consider use of economic sanction, to put this nation in check.
