Inauguration Perks Go To the Rich
VIP-seating at the "We Are One" Concert Among the Benefits for Big Donors
By JUSTIN ROOD, ANNA SCHECTER, and MEGAN CHUCHMACH
Jan. 19, 2009
President-elect Barack Obama (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/President44/story?id=6679480&page=1) billed his inauguration (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/President44/story?id=6655200&page=1) an event "for all Americans." But in the nation's capital this long weekend, wealthy visitors are finding themselves a bit more equal -- and warmer -- than others.
Most Americans here to see President-elect Obama make history (http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2009/01/the-note-11909.html) crammed onto buses and trains, slept on floors and fought crowds and cold. But the wealthiest Americans coming to see the event are enjoying all the perks their money and power ever warranted.
For CEOs and stars arriving by private jet, local airports have shut down entire runways to serve as parking lots for their planes. Officials are prepared to handle hundreds of private aircraft for the long weekend.
Limousine companies have been busily shuttling the somebodies around town in style. Shirlington Limousine's Chris Baker says he has seen a spike in business for this inauguration, as he has for the past five. (Democrats seem to be more last-minute than Republicans, he said. "The GOP has much more advance, prior planning.")
Despite the recession, the big money's sleeping easy in D.C. While many other visitors feel lucky to have a room in a suburban budget hotel or a spot on a friend's floor, the wealthy snapped up rooms in the capital's best downtown hotels weeks in advance. The Four Seasons Georgetown (up to $75,000 for a minimum five-night stay), the Ritz-Carlton (up to $60,000 for a minimum five-night stay) and other top hotels say they have been booked for weeks, even months.
The Four Seasons is using the inauguration to introduce its new Royal Suite a 4,000-square-foot, "bullet-resistant" suite featuring a landscaped terrace, exercise room, library and dining room. A hotel spokeswoman confirmed a guest had booked the suite for the inauguration, but declined to share the guest's name.
The Ritz-Carlton sold a "Politically Correct" package for $50,000, which includes four nights in one of the hotel's suites; two hard-to-come-by seats at the inaugural parade; two tickets to an inaugural ball; a luxury hybrid vehicle with chauffeur on call 24 hours a day; a ball gown and tuxedo from Saks Fifth Avenue; a private in-suite dinner for two at the hotel's restaurant, and more, including a special, inauguration-themed pendant of gold, diamonds, rubies and sapphires valued at $8,000.
iPod Shuffles with Obama's Favorite Songs
Even the lesser rich get their perks: The Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown is giving all of its guests Democrat-blue iPod Shuffles with Obama's favorite songs. (If guests can't figure out how to operate the device, they can call the hotel's "iPod butler" for assistance.)
While hundreds of thousands of Americans spent hours in the cold to enjoy the "We Are One" inaugural concert (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=6676907&page=1) Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial, a clutch of Obama's top donors could watch from a heated tent near the performers, courtesy of the president-elect's Inaugural Committee.
Visitors who hadn't raised hundreds of thousands of dollars couldn't get closer to the performance. "Excuse me! You got tickets? If you don't have tickets, you have to go to 'General Population,'" shouted a guard at an entrance near the memorial, gesturing with her arms to turn around and head back away from the show.
The concert was supposed to be part of "the people's party," said Shawn Paterniti, who had come with his wife Mia from Columbia, Md., to see the show. "But still, you have the VIPs who want their front-row seats. So I guess they get their tickets no one knows about," he said, as he and his wife headed to join the "general population," far away from the performances.
"It seems odd to have a VIP section for a concert about unity," quipped the local blog DCist.com. The blogger, Kriston Capps, suggested a new name for the event: "We Are One, but Some Are More One Than Others."
On Tuesday, millions are expected to brave the weather on the National Mall to be a part of Obama's inaugural parade and swearing-in. Meanwhile, businesses and law firms with offices along the parade route are inviting moneyed clients and lawmakers to view the parade from warmth and catered comfort. And of course the inaugural committee handed out fistfuls of tickets to both events to its high-rolling financial backers. It also gave out 10 tickets to other Americans through an essay-writing contest.
The real inaugural partying happens in the evenings, in lush ballrooms and well-appointed homes. Corporations, unions and interest groups plow tens of thousands of dollars into lavish inaugural balls and parties, while the city's power brokers throw invitation-only soirees in private homes.
Visitors without connections may scrounge to buy a $150 ticket to a state ball and feel a small part of history; meanwhile CEOs, media personalities and major campaign donors hop from private party to ball to private party.
Garnering RSVP's for the most elite parties should be easy, but some hosts aren't above resorting to friendly bribery: At least one sent invitations to potential guests accompanied by specially-engraved bottles of champagne.
"There are lobbyist-sponsored and corporate sponsored parties all over Washington during the week," says Criag Holman of the Congressional watchdog group Public Citizen, who believes the events can be used to improperly influence politicians.

The point is, Obama ran as a man of the people. With everything in common with the average American, a guy who was going to make things better because he knows what it's like, to be black, and white, and a surfer, and a pot head, and party with 60s radicals and former Marine preachers that have channeled retardation to new heights.
Therefore, he should be like Andrew Jackson and invite everyone over to the White House for the party.
That about cover it?

Is it Wednesday yet? I work as a home health nurse.. the traffic, the crowds are a PIA. It took me an extra hour to get to work this morning due to it all. I really don't care anymore, who is getting sworn in, as long as it is over and done with.
Channel 7 weather guy said that with the wind chill factored in, the temp should be a spiffy 10 degrees around noon. Oh yeah, sure.. I have a life sized mental picture of me hanging in that kind of weather. Packed in like sardines, to watch a "Jumbotron".. when I could sit here comfy, warm, sipping cafe con leche and watch the same thing.
Is it Wednesday yet?
I'm going to try and brave the crowds tomorrow just to take in the spectacle and say I was there.
The Metro on Saturday night was already mobbed with out-of-towners clogging the escalators (no standing on the left side, people), and inexplicably trying to cram themselves into the last door of the last car on the train.
It's gonna be something, and I'm probably going to wish I had stayed home and watched it on TV, but curiosity kills the cat I guess.

Swearing on the Bible is not mandatory - just traditional protocol.
Some genius back in the day thought people would be less inclined to lie during an oath if they placed their hands on the Bible. (This custom remains in the US legal tradition). Obviously the genius didn't read the Bible very carefully - because the Bible says that Christ said that one should just swear without invoking any name or object.
But whatever.

I think Obama gave a great speech. He has a beautiful family, as does Biden. Not sure if the oath flub up was Obama's or Roberts' fault, but oh well. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West -- know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."
This part caught my attention.

That was one hell of a party. From what I've read the general public graciously helped themselves to every available refreshment until the next morning when the crowds were dispersed. Many rooms were torn up, people spent the night sleeping/passed out on the White House lawn, fistfights broke out and Jackson managed to escape and spent the first night of his presidency sleeping at a hotel.

And yeah I am a serving member and I serve the office not the person. Doesn't mean I can't laugh at something I think is funny. And who gave you the right to call me a peice of crap? You should read the Army times and see how many people in the Army are stoked about having him as a President. Especially combat mos jobs. So for lack of a better word screw you
And you sir seem to claim the LE world as your profession. Some of the members I saw not saluting were in fact members of the LE world. So I guess in turn that makes you a peice of crap using your logic...Good job Supertrooper
You've been here a month. Tone down on the internet tough-guy stuff. You're giving people the wrong impression of you and the branch of the armed services you represent. So for lack of a better word, shut it.

"Address Gun Violence in Cities: Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent"

Isnt that the point of Amendments, when parts become outdated ammendments can be made. Lets face it, when ammendments are made, you cant please everyone. But this is why people elected him, to make these decisions.

I don't have complete confidence in him either, you don't get to the most powerful office in the land without owing something to people and organizations that helped you get to that point. That's why I didn't vote for him on November 4th and I wouldn't vote for him now.

And I am going to laugh as he cuts social programs even deeper than Bush ever could have, and he slashes the military until it is no longer capable of fighting any war we are involved in, and the economy fails leaving millions broke, and standing in a soup line like other people in third world countries do daily to survive. And all I will say to the clowns who were sucked into his vortex of lies is....where is your beloved president now?:)
I would not wish ill on no one...except hollow leaders and the lies they tell, and the blind and corrupt who supported, lauded, and applauded every move this dirt bag made. (This is for you Oprah! You fat whale!):bash:
I did not vote for this dirt bag. I did not vote for McCain either. Their campaigns were virtually the same. Just one flipped and flopped more than the other. I did a write in vote for Crusty the Clown..because the sad state of our government just wants to make a person laugh, and laugh.:)

I am willing to laugh over the disappointment that will fall upon Obama's blind followers when the euphoria fades (and I will do the same thing if there was an equivalent Republican in office), but I still think that Obama still has the capacity to be a great president, regardless of the monumental hype that he will have to kill quickly, and I hope he excels.
Laughing if this nation itself fails just because you don't like the president, and especially if you actually live in the country itself, is just ****ed-up.

Could not agree more. I did not support Bush. I thought some of his motives were very questionable. But as for this clown......I wish him the worst. The campaigns between O'bama and McCain were....the same. Just one flipped flopped less than the other. And as for this promise of change...well the only thing that changes is....nothing. IT ALL STAYS THE SAME.
This clown has managed to do what the Romans did a long time ago..take the minds of the people off of what needs fixed, and give them...a very large party, mostly taxpayer funded. And when the confetti settles, millions are homeless and poor, and we are involved in another war.....the question will be asked, where is your president now?
If AMerika wants true change, then more would be done about corruption in government. If AMerika wants true change, then stop throwing glitzy parties paid for by tax payers during the worst economic downturn since the great depression, and start stepping up to the plate..because when the pooey hits the fan...fake, hollow so called leaders can only promise so much before they can no longer lie to a public that is just fed up with the puppet show we call American politics.
And again I ask....where is your president now?

I wish the new president well. The man's got to be well aware of his place in history, I'm sure he'll try and keep his administration a scandal free zone and do a good job. I'm cautiously optimistic.
But going back to the first inauguration I remember paying any attention to in 1992, then Bush, and now Obama, I've never liked all this over the top inauguration day pomp. "Accident to who?
Asks Artzieli junior,
the country's accident,
answers the poor cop,
the stock market is down,
people jumping off roof tops,
Messiah jumped too,
and was killed.
Everything is lost,
cries Ezra Dahan the contractor,
Messiah is in the sky,
and we are with no money here.
And beautiful Yardena mumbles,
this can't be.
Messiah won't come,
Messiah won't even phone..
Black December,
cried the headlines,
and the Treasury minister was interviewed on TV.
The public is stupid,
so the public pays,
what comes easy,
will disappear as easily.
The little man,
has to pay big,
and I am interested,
in Yardena more than all.
Going to reserve duty,
counting the money I don't have.
Messiah won't come,
Messiah doesn't even phone..

It looks like the size of Obama's crowd may be a little inflated:
Crowd more than a million, may be record
January 20, 2009 7:55 PM[/URL]
More than a million giddy spectators convened on the national mall to watch Barack Obama take the oath of office today, but it is unclear if the crowd surpassed the record believed to have been set three and half decades ago at Lyndon B. Johnson's 1965 inauguration.
Though early estimates Tuesday ranged as high as 2 million, satellite images of Obaam's swearing-in suggested the actual size of the throng may have been closer to half that, according to Clark McPhail, a sociologist who has been analyzing crowds on the mall since the '60s.
"It was sparser than I thought," said McPhail, an emeritus sociologist from the University of Illinois. "There were lots of open spaces."
The National Park Service -- long relied on to calculate crowds for large Washington events -- is expected to provide a firmer estimate later in the week, according to a spokesman.
Crowd counting is an inexact and controversial science. And experts cautioned it would be difficult to quickly calculate the size of the gathering.
"A million rolls off the tongue very easily, but most people have no idea what it really looks like," McPhail said.
Tuesday morning, the hometown Washington Post initially cited security sources who put the crowd at 1.8 million.
The Associated Press, which did its own analysis, estimated "more than 1 million."
The park service has not done official estimates in more than a decade, following an order by Congress to stop in the aftermath of controversy over how many people attended the 1995 Million Man March.
Then, estimates varied from 400,000 to over 1 million.
Public affairs director David Barna said the agency would likely produce a number this year because of the historic nature of Tuesday's events and public demand for an estimate.
"We don't think anyone in Congress will be really upset," he said.
Johnson's inaugural crowd was estimated at 1.2 million.
McPhail pointed to relatively uncrowded sections of the mall between the Capitol and the Washington Monunment and to thin crowds along the parade route to explain his estimate.
That would place the crowd significantly below the 3 million that Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty warned might converge on the city for the inauguration.
Around Washington Tuesday, some signs initially pointed to a record-setting event.
The crush in the morning was so large that authorities for a time shut off access to the eastern section of the mall between the Capitol and the Washington Monument, an area that when tightly packed can accommodate around 1 million people.
Another 240,000 ticket-holders were in the area closest to the stage.
Sparser crowds filled in further down the mall by the Lincoln Memorial.
Nearer the Capitol, inauguration-goers stood shoulder-to-shoulder, at one point packed so tightly that reaching into a pocket became nearly impossible.
"I lost my people a long time ago," laughed Michelle Murchison, of Richmond, Va. "But, hey, I'm grown, I have a cell phone, I have a credit card."
Elsewhere, long lines of people waited for hours to get through security checkpoints to watch the inaugural parade come down Pennsylvania Avenue.
And Washington's subway system was jammed starting before dawn as more than 545,000 people boarded trains before noon, when Obama was officially sworn in.
Some, like Teresa Wright, never made it. ``Unfortunately, I'm going to have to catch it on the news,'' she said, standing on a street corner near the White House.
Wright, who traveled to Washington from Philadelphia for the inauguration said was bitterly disappointed but happy she made the trip. ``I was here,'' she said. ``I heard the crowd roaring when he was sworn in.''

The coronation, I mean inauguration, was something bad, (but has been since we started crowning presidents with Reagan).
Did anyone just watch his press conference where he signed those executive orders about freedom of information, "just because I have the power to make it secret doesnt mean it should be secret, or just because i say it should be secret doesnt mean it should be secret", and the AG must overlook and this applies to anything any "other president" might have made secret.

Picking on this dude that wrote a historic speech, while the rest of us sat around and posted here whilst eating cheetos is kinda gay.
The Daily show got it right. Just some Bush's speech remixed.

Ugh classic Yuppy who has never worked hard in his lifeThe fellow graduated from his college as a valedictorian and is a writer for the President of USA at 27 - and judging from all the speeches on the campaign he's damn good at his job. What exactly do you consider hard work?
I guess to you I've probably never worked hard either because I'm a software engineer and not a lumberjack or something.

Well i am a military man so ill leave it at that. But also you have a practical (and usefull skill) he is a future polotican in training, who will no doubt be a drain on the goverment. Here is the thing, I do not have resect for people who go straight into working for a polotican with out paying any dues, working as a lumber jack or as a fisherman doin hard work for a few years is very important for truly developing charachter. In addation i looked this kid up and he is a hold over from Kerry's 2004 campaign
Frankly I thought it may have been Obama's worst speech yet. Uninspiring, there was no "ask not what your country" moment, there was no "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself", etc.
For a guy who got where he is due to impressing people with rhetorical flourish, he really laid an egg yesterday.

I agree... I heard the same failed egg nog speech too. If that's the best this kid can do in such a moment that the left wanted immortalized in marble... he failed , and big. And if the potus did not see the mediocre product while practicing... jeez what was he thinking about to miss about the only game we know he's good at.
