Military forms special forces units

Baghdad, Iraq Press, June 20, 2004 – The interim government is putting the finishing touches to a plan to set up special forces units.

The new units, to be formed soon, are a cornerstone in Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's’s drive to restore law and order and continue the fight against terrorists.

Allawi, the Iraq Press has learned, is discussing the plan with military commanders and has ordered the formation of at least three brigades and as soon as possible.

The main task of the new units is to put an end to terror and sabotage actions which the government blames on remnants of the former regime and foreign armed groups.

Allawi’s term expires by the end of the year allowing for general elections for a national assembly and new government.

It is not known when the three special forces brigades will be ready, but sources, refusing to be named, said training of a vanguard unit is already underway.

The new brigades will be separate from the other military formations and will undergo special training and be equipped with the military hardware that will enable them to reach targets as quickly as possible.

They said US and British commando officers are taking part in the training.

Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry is bracing for the transfer of sovereignty on June 30 and has received the majority of military tasks undertaken by the US-led occupation troops.

Gen. Amer al-Hashemi, the chief of staff, has said the ministry is pressing ahead with plans for a full control of military operations.

Makes sense. They won't be able to rely on US SF forever.
