Military secrets 'on the net' Jun 20 2004

By Caroline Wheeler, Sunday Mercury

Top secret information about covert UK military operations and army bases is being revealed on the internet.

Security experts fear army enthusiasts may have innocently breached the Official Secrets Act - and could be playing into the hands of terrorists.

A Sunday Mercury investigation discovered a number of websites, which we are not naming, detailing some of the country’s best-kept military secrets.

One even features satellite photographs of the bases and information about their current use.

Another posting from a military fan revealed details about an SAS training centre. It said: “The area (of a photograph) seems to be a former munitions depot, judging by the dismantled train line system just west of the training area’s main gate.

“But wait! What is a jet aircraft doing hidden in a clearing?

“Perhaps the clue is on the county location; Herefordshire. Yes, this area is now used exclusively by the SAS.

“The plane, shown in the close-up photograph, is rumoured to be used for counter-terrorism training.”

In another astonishing entry, an author wrote of a base in Northamptonshire: “This site once stored cruise missiles and is now one of the UK’s most important and sensitive military intelligence bases.”

And another Midland site was described as “an old USAF air-base, but no runways have been apparent for many years.

“On the map the base appears as a significant cluster of aerial symbols. That’s because it’s the focal point for the US military’s communications with Europe.”

One website creator also gives details of an undisclosed base in Shropshire, which they claim played a key part in the war with Iraq.

“At first, it would appear that this site would just be part of the defence storage and distribution agency network,” he said.

“But in fact it was also used as a major training and mobilisation centre for the war on Iraq.”

Outside the region, the websites reveal a number of other “dual” and secret sites.

Last night, security experts condemned the sites as “irresponsible”.

Air Vice Marshall Tony Mason, who holds a fellowship at the University of Birmingham, said: “This information will be of immeasurable help to any would-be terrorists. They represents a potentially serious threat to military installations in the UK.

“It is difficult to see what kind of rational or ideology could lead any individual to publish this kind of information on the internet. It is totally irresponsible.”

Mr Mason, who advises the House of Commons Defence Committee, added: “In the Cold War days, spies would die to get their hands on this kind of information.

“Yet now, in a time where terrorism and a need for tightened security is even more prevalent, we seem to be happy to hand over this kind of information on a plate.”

Charles Shoebridge, a security analyst and former counterterrorism intelligence officer, said: “Some of the material on the sites could constitute a breach of the Official Secrets Acts.

“But a prosecution is much harder when much of the material concerned is, albeit with some research, freely available in the public domain.

“Aerial photos and maps of a secure establishment provide the quality of information previously only available from an inside source.

“Details such as the precise location of fences, bunkers and target facilities are obviously of great value to any potential attacker.”

Last night, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “The UK does not operate any secret bases in the UK.

“However, there will be elements within the MoD that, for operational reasons, are classified. Security at all our military installations is always of paramount importance.”

The Sunday Mercury contacted the webmasters of the rogue sites, but they were unavailable for comment.

You know, these "military enthusiasts" are for the most part just pulling this stuff out of the public domain and then deducing, like anybody with half a brain, what is going on.....Now Im sure that maybe some of these enthusiasts might have insider information from freinds but I seriously doubt that these "bases" are not known to any country with an intelligence service worth a damn or any terror group like AQ.....I mean for christs sake "Hereford a SAS area"...ROFLMA, who in Gods name would have ever expected Hereford was used by the SAS!!! I mean, its only been talked about everywhere since before I was born practically!!!

I mean come on for the love of God.......maybe I can see these websites helping dumb **** terror groups or lone wolf with a grenade types but for a sophisticated terror group to not know would surprise me greatly.....

Notice that the intel guys didnt call these websites "illegal", just "irresponsible" which suggests to me that they are not actually posting classified material.....just making educated deductions off of publicly available satellite images and such........I mean, you can pick up any enthusiast publication and find info like this....Air International has for years posted stuff like this.....In fact, years back they ran two cover pages in a row on the story of a secret US Spy plane witnessed being guarded by an SAS as a helocopter unique to the SAS flew in to protect it.........pictures were taken and everything........

But you know what this means guys: Big brother is watching you hehehehe....Adjust posts accordingly....NOT.

Not that hard to get ariel photos if you know the area and reference, you can use the internet, and most councils will sell them to you iirc.
