British Lawmaker: Israeli Fired at Group
UPDATED - Saturday June 19, 2004 10:29pm

LONDON (AP) - A member of Britain's House of Lords said Saturday that Israeli soldiers shot at her and two other lawmakers during a fact-finding visit to Gaza the day before.

Baroness Northover, the Liberal Democrat party's spokeswoman on international development issues, said the group was traveling under U.N. supervision near the Rafah refugee camp Friday when soldiers in an Israeli observation post fired machine guns over their heads.

A large number of children were nearby, she said.

The group then moved closer to marked U.N. vehicles and another shot hit a building next to them, chipping off pieces of masonry near Northover, she said in a statement.

"This incident has shown me first hand the indiscriminate violence faced by Palestinians on a daily basis," she said. "If the Israeli Defense Force are prepared to shoot at a delegation of Parliamentarians under the supervision of the U.N., one wonders what treatment ordinary Palestinians are given."

She said the Israeli military appeared to be trying to prevent the group, which also included Labour Party legislator Huw Irranca-Davies and Conservative Crispin Blunt, from seeing "the full effects of Israel's policy of demolishing Palestinian housing in Gaza."

Northover said that when the lawmakers returned to Britain they would seek an explanation from Israel's ambassador to London.

The Israeli Army said it was unaware of the alleged shooting but would investigate.

"It should be emphasized that the delegation did not coordinate their arrival with either the Foreign Ministry or the Defense Ministry and that only late Saturday afternoon a formal complaint was received" after the claim was aired in the media, the army said.

The army emphasized that Rafah was a combat zone, with almost daily outbreaks of violence.

Heh, in the Hebrew thread we've talked about it, we talked about how long it will take you to get the news about it (p.s. what's up with the news about the american strike in Iraq that killed 22 civilians? I still haven't heard people crying like they cry when we kill one or two civilians accidently).

Anyway, IMO it's not possible to identify fire from 200meters in day light, while running or while taking cover behind a car and without using googles.

Why not, but I m sure those expert who all for sure spent a long time training and serving their country`s armed force ( LOL) can easily make a diference between machine gun fire and assault rifle fire, direction of fire and origin of fire.
second thing, If they were fired on by an IDF machine gunner at 200m, with neutralisation aim as they claim, they wouldn`t be able to claim anything to anyone anymore.
So basically, when mofo`s in loss of speed with their local constituants want to get a chill for free and play international hero, they come here, so they are sure it wont be really dangerous, will be acclaimed, covered by the ubiquitous media and will even be able to claim to be survivors of the "terrible israeli war machine".
Hey "defenders of human rights " while you`re gesticulating, christians and animists of Sudan are being slaughtered by the thousands everyday, but it`s true, you didn`t know, Sudan was in page 13 of your paper.

Crispin Blunt resigned his commission in 1990 and after a stint in business became special adviser to Malcolm Rifkind, who was then Secretary of State for Defence.

Given that he was in the (full time, professional) UK Army from 1979 to 1990, probably better than you can, you tosser.

One of several former Army officers on the Conservative benches, Crispin Blunt resigned his commission in 1990 and ..........

Being an ex-British army officer does not make him a font of military knowledge, the ones I have come across were in the most cases next to useless generally only looking to enhance their careers or wondering where their next mess dinner was coming from. Not a very impressive bunch.

Not an assumption but admittedly a generalisation.

Crispin Blunt was commissioned as an Army Officer into the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary's Own) and served until 1990. During the 1980's he was stationed in Cyprus, Germany and the UK, serving as a Troop Leader, Regimental Operations Officer and Armoured Reconnaissance Squadron Commander, resigning his commission as a Captain in 1990

So he spent plenty of time swanning around a mess in Germany/UK/Cyprus with a few field exercises, a couple of parades a year, may be a few months in BATTAS, much too much garrison soldiering 9-5 or is that 10-4!! As an RAC/cavalry 'woopert' he would have attained his commission on who he was and not what he was. Again, sorry not impressed. I saw what those blokes were made of last year in the sandbox and it was not up to much.
