I was wondering if any members own a SIG 556. I'm thinking about selling my AK-74 and getting the SIG.

They are great shooters. I shot a side folder a few weeks ago. It was nice, Even had the sig mini dot. The sig toys that they make for it are neat. But that 74 ammo is such a great deal.

I would keep the 74. The 556 is alright. Didn't see anything spectacular about it accuracy wise.
My best friend who is also our departments firearms Instructor bought one last year, I really enjoy shooting it, if I didnt already have my AR set up the way I like, I would definately be tempted.
That being said you might think about keeping the Ak and saving a little longer for the Sig, I wish I had never sold my Ak several years ago, a sale I truly regret.

I have shot My cousins 556, and i love it. Dont get me wrong i love my AR, but the 556 is different. He wishes he had gotten an AR because there inst the same options for Accessories, He bot a Miad grip without knowing the 556 doesn't use AR Grips. If i had an abundance of money id get a 556, probably the European Clone version.
personally for the price differance id go for the 74.

I was next to a guy shooting one at the range. That thing spits out shell casings so hard, I had to move. Looked pretty neat though. For the price, I'd sell the AK, and buy a few AR lowers.

I'm liking the SIG 556 Classic. It actually looks like a 550 series SIG, rather than some type of hybrid.

I would be willing to sell one of my ARs to fund this........
They're also going to release the SIG552LR, which shoots 22lr.
same here i like the classic look. sig swat kinda over the top.

X2, and the bolt release felt weird to me, dont know why though.

A Sig rep tried to sell us on it, when I brought up the unnatural reach to the magazine release, he preached "training." Im already well versed on the AR platform, and the Sig 556 doesnt offer enough advancements and remarable reliability over the system I use now to want to retrain myself...I wouldnt mind having one for S and Gs though.

The sig 556 is no where near as good as the Original. It's an abortion. Keep the AK or get an AR.

I took the SIG 550/556 armorer's course at Sig Academy and have shot the rifle in many courses there. Compared to an AK, they are both have similar insides. Of course, the Sig is a more refined design. In manual of arms and firing, its more like an M-16. The calibers are the same. The 556 is slightly heavier, but its alot easier to clean and maintain, IMO. The original 556 had foregrips that did not look as "sexy" as the 550-series grips.
IMO, the AK and 556 are not comparable. Different calibers, fit and finish favor the 556, and you can buy three AK's for the price of one 556. It depends what you want to do with your rifle. If you want to plink rounds downrange on the cheap, I would keep the AK. IMO, if you want a more reliable rifle than an M-16/AR-15, that can take AR-15 accessories and is chambered for that round, the Sig 556 is a great choice.

Sig 556 retains nothing from the original 550. The mags are AR mags, the lower is not the same. The sights are not the same.
This is how it should look like

An AR-15 in this case is closer to the authentic rifle than the 556 abortion is

The 556 has never been claimed to be the same, i read an interveiw with the designer and he said that it had been" Americanized" (aka better).over here i consider AR mags to be better, because basically they are cheaper.

Americanized does not mean better, it means it had to have enough US parts on it to comply with state department laws, hence you got a frankengun. People in the US are spending big bucks to make thier 556 look like a 550. Check out the SIG forums and you'll see ;)

Dont get me wrong i would love a 550, but over here that wont happen, but your comparing things that dont really matter. the profile doesnt change how it sends rounds down range.

Sure it depends. Is the 556 barrel same as the 550? They are not...The 550 is a 1/9 twist made for the gp90 63gr 5.56 ammo. It's one of the most accurate rifles out of the box.
The 556 is a 1/7 twist barrel, ideal for heavier loads. I've never fired the 556 so I cannot attest to the accuracy of it vs the 550 but I know they are different.

Neither are Sigs, but I have an AR with a 1/7 and another with a 1/9....both shoot 1 MOA and damned if I can see which is the more accurate weapon....I suppose if I was trying for 600 yards I would notice a difference, but from barrel to 300, it seems to be the same delivery.

the sights are off the 551, and according to the Feb 08 issue of Guns and Weapons there is a 24in barrel with a 1/9twist, did that not come out?

Well at 100 yards SIGs shoot Sub-moa. I have AR's also in 1/7 and 1/9 they are excellent rifles but the SIG is more accurate.

1 MOA has always been good enough for me in .223/5.56....for anything over 150 yards I go to a .308

Can't comment on the Sig 556, but have used Sig 552 Commando for about a year on PSD.
We received the weapons new and mine was zeroed straight out of the box. I think I had to adjust the iron sights once over the course of a year. Sig 552 was very accurate out to 300m (although fore-sight at that distance obscures Brit Fig 11 Target - Lolly Popping required). Weapon was very reliable with every nature of 5.56 that we put through it.
Only dramas were the plastic mags, which were sh1t: kept breaking on the 'lips'. Also we found excessive wear on the weapon's gas plugs, although I never saw this lead to a malfunction. A few of the tritium inserts in the foresights fell out as well. Bit poor.
If (as google suggests) Sig 556 uses M4 mags you should be onto a winner....

Hi Kara,
Yes I own both the P-90 as it called in Canada and a Tavor. Both rifles have their stongpoints
but I'd go with the P90 as a first rifle since its a better quality built and a much nicer trigger.
