So I finished work tonight around midnight and got a lift home from one of the barmaids I wrok with, a girl called Sarah. We were driving back when we see an unconscious man in an England football shirt in the road. Sarah stopped the car and I went over to find this bloke had blood literally pissing out of his head and eyebrow. I called an ambulance from my mobile phone and got one sent.

All the time the dispatcher is giving me advice on what to do including trying to stem the flow of blood, I didn't have anything to use so I ended up taking off my shirt, so now, I'm trying to turn the guy on his side so he doesn't choke on his vomit while holding my shirt to his head while holding my phone to my ear, and now I get to do all of this topless.

The police turned up after about five minutes and they start firing questions at me while we're all trying to help the poor bastard. At this point he wakes up and is talking complete crap, I honestly couldn't tell if he was drunk, concussed or both. After another five minutes the ambulance turns up and they start doing their stuff, then the guy really wakes up and takes a swing at one of the medics shouting "You're hurting me!!", everyone backs up and the medics checked with him if he wanted treatment, he said no and staggered off down the road clutching my shirt while still bleeding. The three policemen, two medics, myself, Sarah and a small crowd watching just stared at each other in amazement.

I first thought the bloke had been hit by a car but after a few minutes a witness came forward to say the guy had been attacked. Personally I'll be amazed if he lives through the night with the amount of blood he'd lost (And probably still is losing).

This literally all happened within the last fifty minutes and I'm actually still shaking a bit, I don't know if it's the shock of it all or the fact I was cold without a shirt on.

The only thing I can say is that the emergency services (Police, paramedics and radio despatchers) deserve your thanks every single day for the crap they put up with.

That definitely is a sucky situation. At least you didn't just leave the guy upon seeing him, there are plenty of people who would've left him.

Bloodstains+clothes= bad problem. Especially if the shirts white, and especially that its a stranger (you never know were the hell they have been...).

All in all good show gaz, sometimes people need to learn from there own stupid actions.

This is true. And that sounded like a lot of blood to be dealing with hands on.

Gaz, did you or the cops at least get the guy name?

You did the right thing. As mentioned before, a lot of people would've just left him. Head wounds can often seem worse than they really are since the blood vessels are just below the skin so it they tend to get messy.

It's like some of you said, the whole time I was trying to help him the thought was running through my mind "Try not to get his blood on you", and no, I didn't get my shirt back.

I actually felt really sorry for the bloke until he took a swing at the paramedic, after that I instantly stopped giving a ****.

You mean with Sarah? Hell no, I've known her since she was thirteen and I was eighteen, it'd be like humping my little sister.

Scalp injuries bleed a lot as it is highly vascularised. But there's a saying amongst A&E docs "a little blood goes a long way". The guy isn't likely to have lost much blood, or bleed for too long before a clot formed.

Good effort though Gaz, putting him in a safe position as he clearly had impaired consciousness was probably the most important thing to do (apart from call the ambulance). He could have easily been sick and aspirated it, which could have been fatal if he was very pissed. I think you'll be glad you did something for him, even though you lost both your shirt and any chance of his thanks!

BTW, Hot Lips, how's the back?

You did a good thing Gaz. We need more ppl like you in this world.
I once pulled a drunk guy out of the way of a bus and he got up turned around and came at me with a punch. I grabbed his arm and told him not to even ****ing think about it. And i took him to the sidewalk and told him to get out of here.

Nicely done gazzeriffic.

About the first damned week I was a cop we got an accident call. Bad traffic deal. Woman in small car hits RV. She was bleeding like crazy, half out of the vehicle. Her upper thigh was hammered and I was worried that her femoral artery was cut which would be very bad so I had to sit there getting bled on with my hands inside her thigh applying pressure to stop the flow till the paramedics got there. She ended up making it. I ended up needing a new uniform.

The police phoned me this afternoon to tell me what happened. It turns out that the man and woman who attacked the guy were arrested late last night. The victim was in hospital and recovering but told the police (And I quote from the inspector who called me) "To go forth and multiply" and that the couple who did the damage were actually friends of his so he wouldn't be pressing charges. The three of them had got too drunk following the England football game, got into an argument and it went from there.
