I have 2 questions about U.S. Navy Pea Coats. My first one is what is the actual issued color, black or navy? The other question i have is, i have seen a few pea coats for sale and some of them that are sold as U.S. Navy pea coats will have a patch on the left sleeve. Here are 2 examples:
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/9085/peacoat1kb8.th.jpg (http://img223.imageshack.us/my.php?image=peacoat1kb8.jpg)
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/2081/f3dc1zf0.th.jpg (http://img444.imageshack.us/my.php?image=f3dc1zf0.jpg)
Is this how they are issued? As you can see the pea coat on top is a first class petty officer and the one under that is a second class petty officer, im curious to know if this how they are issued or if some people just put the patches on for looks

That is the standard location for rank patches afiak. My fathers from Vietnam has them in that spot.

Is there a specific measurement to where the patch goes, i.e. X inches from the top

Peacoats are issued during boot camp. They are black in color with large plastic buttons. (In the 1970's they were issued with silver buttons).
Rate chevrons are for E-4 through E-6.
They are the best coats that money could buy.

They're very warm and very classy. And very expensive in some places.

My dad gave me his because his gut now prevents him from fitting in it. Very warm. It has the heavier silver buttons on it. It still has the issue tag in it even

I don't get that. There's one standard price for the genuine issue. I bought mine on a US Navy base, $109 about 10 years ago. Not sure how much they go for now.
PS: Aside from a few choice pairs in my sneaker collection, it's still the most expensive single article of clothing I own.

I bought mine at Old Navy for about $60. Its exactly the same, even with the Navy anchors. You can't tell the difference if you put them next to an actual Navy pea coat.

I actually tried to order, but the delivery will cost me some 30 euro and for some reason they have no option of paying by credit card (because that's outside of the country?). So I gave up for now. Thanks a lot though, I might try later, when I have time for this...

not nearly as classy as the officer's bridge coat, though!:) course, they're a heckuva lot harder to find and twice as much.
isn't there a diff between the liners as well? i think the civ ones have the quilted liners and the issue ones are smooth, yes?

I got one from there for Christmas last year. Amazing jackets, that is my winter coat for up here at school in Vermont. I just do that and some leather gloves and a beanie, keeps me warm on the really cold days, like today.

I have one from the 80s or so, the liner is smooth.
The liner in my "Kenneth Cole" or whatever is quilted.

I have not read this thread completly so perhaps some questions have been answered by now. But here's a little more info for you.
As far as I know peacoats are still issued in boot camp without rating patches. as a sailor goes up in rate the rating patches are added. When I went to boot camp in 1971 the peacoat was Navy Blue with large black plastic buttons.. Just a couple of years later they where black with silver buttons. The buttons went back to black in the 80's when the USN went back to the traditonal "Crackerjack" uniforms for E-6 and below. They are indeed very warm being made out of wool. I wish I still had one but it would not fit me these days...

Eh, business owners can set the price at whatever they want pretty much. And if people pay, well then it probably won't change.
