'Fahrenheit 9/11' R rating appeal fails
Distributors for Michael Moore's anti-Bush documentary Fahrenheit 9/11have failed to overturn an R rating for the film but would release it in more than 850 theatres this week amid what appears to be growing audience interest.
The Motion Picture Association of America, which rates movies based on criteria such as violence and language, initially issued the R classification that bars people 17-years of age and under from seeing the film without a parent or guardian.
Distributors Lions Gate Films and IFC Films appealed the ruling, arguing that the rating should be PG-13.
That rating allows teenagers to see the film but suggests they be accompanied by an adult.
"The images in the film are no more disturbing than what we have been seeing and, frankly, should be seeing on network news since the Vietnam war," said Tom Ortenberg, president of Lions Gate Films.
"It's perfectly appropriate for 15- and 16-year-olds who are going to be asked to fight in this war, or the next war, to see what war is really like." Fahrenheit 9/11 is filled with violent images from the war in Iraq, including burned and charred bodies of victims, severely wounded soldiers and citizens, and injured women and children.
The MPAA does not disclose the reasons for giving a particular film one rating or another.
While the R rating could limit the size of the audience, the appetite among potential moviegoers does not seem be waning in the days leading up to the Friday's nationwide release.
Mr Ortenberg says Lions Gate and IFC have managed to put the film in over 850 theatres, surpassing the 801 theatres that debuted Tupac: Resurrection, the 2003 documentary about the life of the murdered rap music star.
Highlighting public interest, Fahrenheit 9/11 has become the most-searched documentary on Web site Yahoo!
Its promotional clip is among the five top-screened film trailers on Yahoo! Movies, just behind next week's Spider-Man 2.
The film will debut in Australia at the Melbourne International Film Festival on July 15.

$20 says Moore bitches about his movie being "censored" now.
"It's perfectly appropriate for 15- and 16-year-olds who are going to be asked to fight in this war, or the next war, to see what war is really like."
None of them are going to be asked to fight without having willingly joined the military. I don't need to watch a ****ty anti-war movie to know what war's really like either.

If it contains dead bodies or "pieces" of them, then it should be rated R; no other questions or complaints should be asked.

I'm not surprised at all that it's popular. I'm just pissed because yet again, a Moore movie is being labeled as a "documentary"...even though Moore himself acknowledges that they're opinion pieces.

doc·u·men·ta·ries
A work, such as a film or television program, presenting political, social, or historical subject matter in a factual and informative manner and often consisting of actual news films or interviews accompanied by narration.
It's gets the documentary lable because it's real footage. But i understand what you're saying. It's like calling "Jackass" a documentary, which you can if you want a documentary dealing with the stupid things people do.

just a point: the voting age in the US is 18. 18 year olds can see rated R movies. He may have lost the battle, but I dont think the decision will impact his war if you catch my meaning.

What I find interesting is how he has always shouted from the rooftops that he's just looking out for the common man. That he's just a working class stiff from Michigan. Yet, his success has come from "documenting" the hardships of these same "working stiffs". He's a wealthy man because of their suffering. Has he worked to improve the lot of these people? No. He makes a movie and says, "See how bad things are?"
Its not like he's working in some third world country trying to help poor people and turning any profit from the movie over to a food bank or a charitable organization. He lives the good life now and can more than afford to produce propagandist crap.
I noticed in one of the trailers that includes a shot of President Bush on the golf course, he takes raw news footage of the president making a comment for airing and then since the interview is over he says, "O.k. watch me make this shot." Moore is attempting to make him look unfeeling or callous. More of his slight of hand and trick editing. Same thing he did with "Bowling for Columbine" where he pieced together several different parts of Charlton Heston's speeches and added cutaways of audiences to make it look like one long speech. The man would make Goebbels proud.

are you people really this clueless?!!? sheesh, moore's latest is anything but objective and he has not made any claims to the contrary. this is pure propaganda and moore is proud of his work. his stated objective is to dethrone bush. the american left has to put up with fox news, limbaugh, hannity, coulter, etc., etc. you think moore's work is offensive? read the national review. or listen to one of pat robertson's speeches. tit for tat.

"growing audience interest". Could that perhaps come from all the free publicity it's getting from CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, CBS, and just about everything else? :cantbeli:
Sounds like a bout of "Passion of the Christ" syndrome. :bash:
Yea. Who cares aboot Michael Moore. It seems he gets more discussion here than anywhere else. I frankly don't give two craps about Moore, and his movies or whatever..

Im no expert but isnt showing severally mutilated soldiers a violation of the geneva convention?

I think Moore should put his money where his mouth is and pay for the production of his own movies, like Mel Gibson. And yes, it is a violation of the Geneva convention to show "actual" video of mutilated soldiers. I still don't understand what all the hype is over this movie.

hahaha, says who? Funny how americans tend to yell "Your violating the geneva convention", while they do it themselves too. American soldiers shown on Iraqi tv in the beginning of the war: Oh no, you're violating the GC. You throw clusterbombs, torture suspects etc. and then suddenly it doesn't matter. But when a filmmaker shows a piece of reality he's violating the GC? So basicly every war photographer or news channel that shows war footage are vioating GC?

Well, I am going to see it this friday and i'll tell you guys what I think, mianly to see what type of bull**** he says about 9/11 and the war in Iraq.
Moore is just another asshole who uses the First Amendment against our own government. That's why I am going to see Michael Moore Hates America... because it's true, I wonder... a documentary on Michael Moore's bull****.

I don't see how any of the amendments can be used against the government. The amendments are designed to protect people from the government, which is consistent with the idea that ultimate sovereignty in a democracy lies with the citizenry. The government is merely an agent of the people. If the people are upset with the government, it is their right to speak against it.
I’m going to see Moore’s movie when it comes out. I just hope there is something substantive to it, and it not just be a collection of Bushisms and rehashing of the administration’s claims about Iraq that have since been debunked.

actually it isnt, unless we start charging a lot of news networks with war crimes? rofl The GC protects P.O.Ws from public curiousity and humiliation (key point being the person is alive). Still, sickening Moore would put these things in his movie, i hope at least the faces are blured and I cant imagine the reaction if a relative was watching.

I see nothing wrong with Moore, he is making money and voicing his opinion. I personally think his opinions are wrong, but that’s why they are his and not mine. I think the real problem is that there is no one doing the same thing, with a bias to the 'right'.

by trash talking him...your making him even more popular...everyone knows who he is...sure he had some satirical documentaries in the past (i liked roger & me) but overall, he wasn't very popular until a while ago...people now trash talk about him...he's after your attention...and he's winning the battle...

I guess that rule only applies when you are selling something. Except a war, apparently.
