Here is a photo I found in an antique shop, that shows 4 US military, I believe marines...and on the back it notes their names and the photo was taken aboard ship before the Saipan invasion:

You will note the fellow on the far right has a pipe in his hand (trying to look older no doubt). Here are the names on the back of the photo:

left to right PFC Ashton, Cpl. Nelson, Cpl Morris and "yours truly" (no name, but obviously the guy with the pipe send the photo home to his sweetheart or parents)
Next is a "short snorter" note, which was signed by members of a flight crew of an allied (American I suspect) aircraft, note the bill is one of the 1935 series and was overstamped for use in Hawaii after Pearl Harbor because the USA did that in case the islands were taken by Japan after Pearl.

the way I understand the short snorter worked was you carried it in you wallet and if challenged at a bar, you had to produce your short snorter or buy drinks if you forgot it.
