NY Post apologizes — to some — over Obama cartoon

NEW YORK – The New York Post is apologizing for a cartoon that critics say links President Barack Obama to a raging chimpanzee shot dead by police in Connecticut. But the newspaper also says the image was exploited by its longtime antagonists.
After two days of protests, the paper posted an editorial on its Web site Thursday saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but "to those who were offended by the image, we apologize."
The editorial also says some people who have long-standing differences with the paper saw the cartoon "as an opportunity for payback."
The editorial calls them "opportunists" and says: "To them, no apology is due."
The drawing was published Wednesday. It shows a dead chimp, with the caption reading: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

That's the thing, everyone is stupidly assuming that the monkey is referring to Obama!!

Sam Stein of the Huffington Post and Al Sharpton are up in arms (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/18/new-york-post-chimp-carto_n_167841.html) about an editorial cartoon in today's New York Post. The cartoon, playing off a news story about a rabid chimpanzee who was shot by police officers, uses the punchline "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." Like the vast majority of editorial cartoons, it's pretty dumb.
Sharpton complains:

The cartoon in today's New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys.
Stein is slightly more cautious:

At its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Others believe it compares the president to a rabid chimp. Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into politics is bound to be controversial.
But, look, obviously the point is that the stimulus bill could have been written by a monkey. The monkey doesn't look like Obama and is in no way suposed to represent him. And it incorporated violence because the monkey in the news story was, in fact, shot -- and the punchline depends on the monkey being dead and thus unavailable to write further legislation. Again, while it's a mediocre joke at best, Obama supporters shouldn't be looking for racial slights around every corner. So far there have been very few of them.

The NAACP seriously needs to learn how to analyze original intent and context or they will remain hypocritical to their cause of abolishing racism. On second thought, maybe not doing so is their intent so that they will always have something to do.

Do you consider this cartoon racist?
It is Congress's Newspaper "The Hill".
I know most presidents have big ears in editorial cartoons.

They can't use Dumbo for the big ear jokes even though it strikes closer to home and slightly neutralizes the race issue (grey is what happens when you mix black and white) simply because the elephant is too strongly associated with Republicans.

Maybe one of those cigar smoking Pinnocchio donkeys???

lol. Those people are going to boycott a paper that a majority of those people don't even read. That's hilarious. Good luck with that NAACP.

I never said that it hasn't. But having a black guy as such a huge target for ridicule has really brought the rabid/hypocritical lashings from the PC crowd to the surface. I can only see this going bad for them, as people are not going to fear being called racists when they critique their president.

No i dont. Its their own damn fault they are even acknowledging Sharpton like hes still relevant. If they are gonna make cartoons with obvious connotations then they better own up to it. Not sit there, make the cartoon and scratch their heads "i dont get it, how can this in anyway be interpreted as racist?" Lol @ the "but they called george bush a monkey so why was that ok?" I dont think white folks have ever been compared to chimps in our long elustrious history. Anyone who pretends they didnt know that chimp, ape or monkey is a derogatory term for blacks is just lying or a total ****ing hippy retard whos been in the cul-de-sac to long.

Have you ever heard the old saying, "If you get enough chimps in a room with type-writers, eventually they will write the Constitution"? I think what the author was implying, was that the Stimulus bill was so poorly written and such a bad idea, Chimps could have come up with it.

If you want to talk about racism, CNN has a black news show with DL Hughley. That itself denotes racism against all non blacks. What about BET, Black Entertainment Television? An entire channel devoted to "black" culture and the black community. Isn't that racist (Not to mention, a little embarrassing since it goes to great lengths to prove black sterotypes)? Or do we owe them that? They have Black History Month, Where is Native American History month?

The people who get so ape-sh*t pissed about a misunderstood cartoon like this one are racist. Sharpton is the biggest racist in the black community, and he ran for President. If I were in charge of an organization that pursued the interests of the Whit race, I'd be compared to the Neo-Nazi movement and KKK.

I don't owe anyone sh*t. I'm of Irish decent, remember, Irish need not apply?

I don't walk around with a chip on my shoulder. I don't feel like My people are owed a TV channel/month/Al Sharpton-like asshole.

People need to man the f*ck up and either laugh or don't laugh.

Yes im aware of that term and it makes sense with the cartoon but i know deep down the cartoonist set it up purposely to be percieved the way it did just for the shock value and to get his name out there. No i dont know 100% he was being racist but i 100% believe he knew it would cause a **** storm and get him publicity. Even bad pub is good pub.

I wasnt aware DL Hughley's show was "for blacks". Ive never seen it referenced in such a way. Also i could give a ****, that show sucks ass after i seen him suck blagos **** for 20 minutes straight in a softball interview.

I dont think BET exists because blacks feel that they are "owed a TV channel". Its not like a bunch of white board members said "we owe them, lets givem a channel". Stephen Hill (black) owner of BET/race traitor made it because it would make him money. Simple as that. Also i totally agree BET is racist onto its self and its own viewership. Thats why i refer to him as a traitor to his own race, selling them out in the such. Apparently black people as young as 10 and old as 90 all love rap, soul plane and gospel music. More stereotypes than a Carlos Mencia standup routine.

Yea im aware of the irish oppression but thats really a total non-issue these days. We cant say the same about blacks, mexicans or even poor white people.

See what I did there, that logical progression made about as much sense as yours did. If you put any thought into the post you'd understand that I think more exposure to the idiotic PC double standards we have will increase aggravation between races. No one likes being discriminated against, and the more obvious it gets the more spiteful people will become. I think it's ironically humorous that the PC crowd's attempts to make us equal are causing the irritation between everyone.

Oh its ironically humorous. I interpreted it as "i wanna see mass bloodshed and a scorched earth". My mistake William C. I say we get rid of all racial figureheads. I agree they are creating more tension while being in it for their own selfish personal gains.

I think through my rant, I digressed a bit. I know BET doesn't exist because it was "owed" to black people. It exists because black culture is profitable The Media moguls created BET, knowing that the majority of the viewers would be whites aged 13-25.

This itself is digressing from the thread topic, and leading to a flame war, so I'll get back on topic.

I don't believe the cartoonist did this for publicity or because he is racist. I think he did this because he disagrees with the Stimulus bill. I further think that the ones who make such a big issue out of the cartoon, are the ones most uncomfortable with race relations.

Why should I have to see Al Sharpton everytime a black person is offended. He is he the "Face" of race relations pertaining to blacks. The guy has a huge chip on his shoulder and is the real racist of this whole "issue".

Hes the racial ambulance chaser. Once he and Jackson die off we wont have to deal with such ****. They are still stuck in their old ways. We have a new generation where excuses and using race as a soapbox is becoming less.
