Obama chooses Locke to run Commerce Department

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama introduced former Washington Gov. Gary Locke as his nominee for Commerce secretary Wednesday, trying a third time to fill a key Cabinet post for a country in recession.

"I'm sure it's not lost on anyone that we've tried this a couple of times. But I'm a big believer in keeping at something until you get it right. And Gary is the right man for this job," Obama said, standing with the fellow Democrat in the Indian Treaty Room at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House.

Locke, 59, was the nation's first Chinese-American governor, serving two terms in Washington from 1997 to 2005. He currently works for the Seattle-based law firm Davis Wright Tremaine on issues involving China, energy and governmental relations.

Even after Obama made Locke's selection official, his Cabinet still won't be complete.
He still does not have a health and human services secretary; former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination for that post amid a tax controversy. Among those under consideration to replace him is Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

Locke still must get through Senate confirmation hearings to assume the post, and there are a number of issues over which he may face questions.
He was briefly linked to the scandal over foreign contributions to President Bill Clinton's 1996 campaign. Locke denied any wrongdoing, and he subsequently returned some checks tied to people implicated in the matter.

In December 1997, Locke's political committee was fined a maximum $2,500 by state regulators after it admitted breaking campaign finance laws during two out-of-state fundraisers in 1996.
And in March 1998, state investigators cleared Locke of wrongdoing following complaints that he unlawfully took $10,000 in campaign contributions from members of a Buddhist church.

Now for those who havent yet heard, this involvement was with John Huang, the Hillary Bundler, the Chinese Temple fundraising scandals of the Clinton/Gore era

As the presumptive Secretary of Commerce, former Gov. and King County exec Gary Locke first has to pass the pre-announcement stage, the post-announcement stage, and, finally, confirmation. There is the added stress factor that Obama's two prior choices (http://www.slate.com/id/2211240/) for the cabinet seat flamed out, so he's got to be squeaky clean. The Seattle Times today says he's exactly that, (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2008778508_locke24m.html) so it must be true.

Of course, there was that memory loss and all those "I don't recall . . . I don't remember" (http://www.seattleweekly.com/1998-09-02/news/the-grilling-of-gary-locke)statements to Congressional investigators in 1999, probing his gubernatorial campaign fund-raising efforts;

the astonishing $3.2 billion tax break he gave to Boeing while never disclosing he paid $715,000 to - and relied on the advice of - Boeing's own private consultant (http://www.seattleweekly.com/2004-03-17/news/the-state-s-two-timing-consultant)and outside auditor for advice;

and those favors for his brother-in-law (http://www.seattleweekly.com/2002-07-10/news/clean-harbor) (who lived in the governor's mansion), including a tax break for his relative's company, personal intervention in a company dispute, and Locke's signature on a federal loan application for the company.

Other than that, yes, squeaky clean."

On the otherhand, having a Northwesterner in the cabinet is worth considering. Especially from a state that produces one of our most important exports, commercial aircraft.

The main task for the Commerce Department is the administration of the census. Highly controvertial due to sampling vs. head count methodology between the political parties.

Is the above poster serious? Its been less then two months.... I know he has promised a lot, but give it at least 3 months, instead of six weeks. Is it in our nature as Americans to get instant gratification? I guess so......:cantbeli:

From here (http://silkroadintl.net/blog/2009/02/26/%e2%80%9cto-get-rich-is-glorious%e2%80%9d/)

Gary Locke (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/25/us/politics/25locke.html)—Chinese American, former governor of Washington and now Secretary of Commerce. (You can follow the money here too.) First appointee was a faithful Democrat who got caught with his hands in the state-contract pie—this was a promised return on a campaign favor gone bad. Second appointee was a conservative with budget and business experience but couldn’t get past the political conflicts with the Obama Whitehouse (surprise, surprise)—this was an attempt to get someone who knew what to do into the right position with as little political fallout as possible. So now, we get to Mr. Locke. Locke is known for his support of Chinese-US trade at a time when it seems to be the most important economic relationship on the planet; Chimerica, as some are calling it. Necessity is the mother of invention, or invitation in this case. The word in Seattle is this (from a friend there):
“Nice guy. Squeaky clean. Honest and very earnest. The only bad thing anyone ever says about him is that he is a lightweight. I think he would make a very good Sec. of Commerce. Doesn’t really know China all that well. Doesn’t speak a word of Chinese and hadn’t gone there until he was Governor. Doesn’t really know foreign policy that well either, but overall should be good for US-China relations.”
I guess we’ll see what we get. I hope that he was appointed because he knows what he’s doing and not because he looks the part.

Well, it is essentially what Obama stumped around on, was instant change.

He has doubled the debt in those months. He bought it, he may not have broken it but he is on his way to grinding it up into a pulp. Time to start asking why. Time to speak out against this explosion of wild spending.

Lose the left right paradigm, it clouds the view and hides common agendas both parties seem to be hell bent on. Breaking us, integrating us into a world Banking Reserve System outside the Constitution. Where currencies are regulated from one reserve board no matter what country you are in.

So, who in Bush's cabinet never paid his or her taxes or made millions as a consultant to a law firm, though not a lawyer himself? Which one of his appointees got up and basically said, "I've been thrown into the deep end". People hated Rumsfeld, but that was idealogical. He had cabinet officers quit over differences, but were any obviously corrupt?

Yeah... all we ever heard about was Cheney and Halliburton and the "no-bid" contracts, which had been in place since Clinton's time.

he is much much better then Gregiour she has been an absolute disastor, Im honestly suprised there hasnt been a recall election yet seeing that she lied about a 8 billion dollar shortfall during the campaign.

But to play along... I'm sure... there's a special corner of hell for people like Cheney & Rummy.

the question is where is all the "Change" everyone was banking on?All my hardcore Obama friends... I told them all Summer/Fall... this change is nothing more than a change of guard. It's funny how some... not most but some really did expect some miracle to happen overnight.

heheh :P
