JERUSALEM - Israel will play a major role in securing the Athens Olympics, with its navy patrolling the Greek coast and military and intelligence officers working closely with the Greek armed forces, the U.S. Army and NATO (news - web sites).

Israel also is advising Greece on how to seal its airspace and coastal waters in the event of a terror attack, Israeli military officials said Tuesday.

A seven-nation security task force, including the United States, Britain and Israel, is part of the $1.2 billion security plans for the Aug. 13-29 games.

There already are ties involving the Israeli navy, its Greek counterpart, the U.S. 6th Fleet and the relevant air forces. Greece, the U.S. Army and NATO also are in close contact with Israeli intelligence, the officials said.

Israel expects one of its senior officers to be at NATO's southern command headquarters in Naples, Italy, during the games. NATO is still undecided on such close Israeli involvement, the officials added.

Private Israeli firms will also contribute to the Greek security effort, supplying patrol boats for the Greek navy, closed-circuit TV and other monitoring systems for the streets of Athens and other services.

Israel's Shin Bet security agency will protect the Israeli team, guarding Israeli quarters in the Olympic village, sites Israeli athletes may visit and sailing events off the Greek coast. The agency has provided such protection since the 1972 killing of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics.

The Olympic guard detail will be Israel's largest because of intelligence estimates of a potential terrorism against Israelis at the Athens Games, officials said.

Greek officials said the foreign security agents will not be allowed to carry firearms.

Just a correction to your artical, Israel's Shabak agents will be allowed to carry firearms, no Israeli team (that includs private teams) can officialy get out of Israel without an armed escort.

It is a good thing that Greek employs Israel's seasoned experience in ensuring the security at the Olympics.

I thought SHABACK was specializing in internal security, arabs and counterintelligence.

If Israeli tourists go OUTside of Israel, shouldn't it be IDF or Israel's Mossad who actually suppose to escort them?
or maybe border MAGAV police?

Every help preventing terrorist attacks in the games are welcome although the article exaggerates a little. Greek air force is more than capable to seal its airspace. There are always interceptors in two minutes readiness for scramble (for reasons other than terrorism) and everything suspicious trying to enter Greek airspace very very soon get a company. So I guess a hijacked airliner will get trouble to enter Greek airspace and the probability of approaching any major city is from zero to none. Additionally to that the Greek airspace is one of the more intense protected airspaces from AA systems Patriot, S-300 etc. (again for reasons other than terrorism). The Athens region is very heavily fortified in that matter. On the other hand, the navy will have a more difficult job because summertime at the Aegean there are literally thousand of vessels traveling everyday and inspecting every one of them is virtually impossible so the Navy has to rely on intelligence for anything suspicious. Btw human rights groups are furious about the cameras that have popped up in every street and beside the picture can record even the conversation of people standing several meters away. Another big debate is the difficulties that people receiving radioactive treatment for tumors will have passing the sensors and enter to watch the games.
