Its the "Star Spangled" Flag, which represents the US flag that flew over Ft McHenry during the British bombardment during the Battle of Baltimore.

now this is not a usual sight: aussie packing a racing spoon!
and not just another racing spoon, but one of the best - the ubiqitous MRE supplied spoon, which is indestructable hence a great racing spoon.

Actually, you'll find most Diggers have a racing spoon on them and thats the spoon from the new style 24 hr CRPs, not an MRE. Sorry to dissapoint you.

And...

Exactly. The US Flag had 15 stars at the time.

During the War of 1812..Lake Champlain was also a battle during the War of 1812. The Battle of Lake Champlain was also know as ......

http://www.lake-champlain.navy.mil/Site%20Images/battleof.gif
The Battle of Plattsburgh, also known as the Battle of Lake Champlain, ended the final invasion of the northern states during the War of 1812. Fought shortly before the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, the American victory denied the British leverage to demand exclusive control over the Great Lakes and any territorial gains against the New England states.

The British had used their victories at the Battle of Bladensburg and the Burning of Washington to counter any U.S. demands during the peace negotiations up to this point. The Americans were able to use the repulse at Plattsburgh to demand exclusive rights to Lake Champlain and deny the British exclusive rights to the Great Lakes. The victory at Plattsburgh and the British failure at the Siege of Baltimore, which came a few days later, denied the British any advantage for territorial gains in the Treaty of Ghent.

Theodore Roosevelt stated it was the "greatest naval battle of the war"; Winston Churchill said it was a "decisive battle of the war."Gee... I though everybody knew that!;-)

Correct.
The the number 57 is clear in the hires.
This is a photo of CG-57 USS Lake Champlain. Again, on the hires, you can just make out the outline of the words "Lake Champlain" on the stern.

Actually, "LMG36" was the designation for a special light support version of the G36 that had a heavier barrel than the assault rifle. The german armed forces however did not buy the LMG36, so any G36 with bipod and drum mag you see is just that - a regular G36.
