US won't participate in racism conference

The United States has decided not to participate in a U.N. conference on racism in April unless the final document is changed to drop all references to Israel and the defamation of religion, a senior U.S. official said Friday.

The conference is a follow-up to the contentious 2001 conference in the South African city of Durban which was dominated by clashes over the Middle East and the legacy of slavery. The U.S. and Israel walked out midway through that eight-day meeting over a draft resolution that singled out Israel for criticism and likened Zionism — the movement to establish and maintain a Jewish state — to racism.

Israel and Canada have already announced that they will boycott the upcoming World Conference Against Racism in Geneva from April 20-25, known as Durban II, but President Barack Obama's administration decided to assess the negotiations before making a decision on U.S. participation.US won't participate in racism conference (http://beeqube.com/article/uswo)

- good news. Canada and Israel already bailed out. Britain and Italy have talked about withdrawing. I hope Denmark will follow suit. Everybody knows they have it in for us anyway. Screw them. Imagine they called a UN hate-fest and nobody showed up.

IMHO, This Obama's admin, attempt to placate the jewish community so that they ignore the naming of an Israeli hating saudi lobbyst to chair the National Intelligence Council.

Other than that still good news, even though that delegation shouldnt been sent in the first place....

This is a crappy conference that never should have been held. It was known ahead of time that is was simply going to be a venue for a few select countries showcase their hatred for Israel under the guise of an official UN event.

but President Barack Obama's administration decided to assess the negotiations before making a decision on U.S. participation. So from the article I get that the US previously decided to boycott this but now Obama wants to"assess" before making a decision. What are the negotiations negotiating? Negotiations mean give and take. Who is giving and who is taking?

Like Bubba Clinton, Obama will nuance it in a way that it looks like the US is participating without actually participating, but we'll act like we participated all the same, so no one can accuse us of not participating.

Why do they keep introducing this anti-Israel crap? They have to know we'll just walk out of the conference again. Why do they waste their time?

A black president pulling the US out of a conferance on racism. That certainly says something about the conferance.

Nothing new really.

The UN talk shop needs to talk because it‘s no good at anything else.

The real UN weight is in the hands of five Permanent Members of the Security Council. The absolute majority of the UN membership is powerless against US veto’s there, so they drag it elsewhere…

But Israel need not gloat.

There are some signs that the Israeli lobby here may need to roll up their sleeves a bit higher when dealing with Obama.

Good point,

I wonder if it would give EU countries the justification to pull out now.

But the "Durban" conference already deligitimized itself in the eyes of honest people, when it could find no evil in the world but in Israel.

Good point,

Actually it was a stupid, worthless point because it has nothing to do with the President's race and everything to do with wishful thinking...Obama is not looking in the mirror when he plans policies, he talks to his advisers.

Next in line: Italy. Italy pulls out of UN racism conference (http://beeqube.com/article/italyp) (I wonder if the headline "UN racism conference" - rather than anti-racism - was a slip or done deliberate by the Tribune.)

Racism conference in Durban? Fvcking sweet. That means they'll round up all the street children and go dump them out in the countryside somewhere, clean up all the rubbish, and flood the city with police.

It'll almost be like a first world city for a while. :)

It'll almost be like a first world city for a while. :)If not cancelled (which might well happen if more countries chose not to attend), it'll be held in in Geneva, Switzerland. It is a repeat of Durban I from 2001 held in Durban.
