Notice that they're not using SA80 rifles ;)
Must be a reason for that

that is the famous resuply convoy :) two half-squadron (A squadron if I remember correctly) fighting columns were in the need of supplies so the SAS got a few bedford trucks and drove them deep into iraq.. they had minimal support except for fighter bombers above. They returned safely to SA after completing their mission.
all happened in 1991.
take care

SA80 is a good rifle, but most SF guys prefer the c8/m4.
I saw a picture of a SBS operator once with an ironsight sa80 :)

I saw a pic from Eye Of The Storm by Peter Ratcliffe where they held a Sergeants Mess Meeting. In that pic, which included, the majority of the squadron, two soldiers had SA80s.

brave men :)
Great pics woot

The SAS doesn't use SA80 because of:
a) you can't attach a grenade launcher like the 203.
b) you have to use the trigger finger to operate the safety catch (madness)
I don't get it: if it's not good enough for the SAS, why equip regular army with it?

a) you can now
b) other weapons use the trigger finger to operate the safety catch, however it is still a disadvantage.
Your weapon is always made by the lowest bidder.

Does anyone know why are those picture b&w? I don't think it's because the photographer was going for the artistic edge...

this mabye a stupid questions, but how come all military vechiles have their headlights blacked out with tape or black paint, or something? At the most, they have just a little line on the light visible.??? I know it's probably a dumb questions, but I don;t understand the reasoning other than keeping the enemy from seeing headlights, but they could do that much easier and just turn them off, why make it so complicated?

if you just turn off the lights...light can still reflect off the back of the light...totaly cover or go off of a small slit...you reduce the posibility of glare

Light reflection from your bulb / casing could possibly give away your position.

If these guys are or similar SAS units are in Iraq NOW, do you think their activities would be put out on news? Or would they be in Iraq completely secret?
UK Government policy is to neither confirm nor deny the deployment of UK SF Units, although a recent article suggested that this policy had been questioned in parliament. Current policy keeps your enemies guessing, which is seen as an advantage.

I was reading a book about Operation Barras, the joint SAS/PARA op to rescue 6 RIR members from the West Side Boys in Sierra Leone.
The MoD (obviously) neither confirmed nor denied the use of SF.
They had to withdraw 90'000 copies of Soldier magazine as it had the SAS mentioned, they were recycled at a cost of £70'000 then printed again with no mention of the SAS.
An 'original' copy might fetch a good price on e-bay!

yeah, right - GREAT photos... :bash:
as i happen to own the book those photos were scenned from, so i can tell the author (barry davies) did'nt authrize anyone to rip his book and plaster all over the place. his book is a collection of private photos of SAS members along the past 50 years.
sure, i also like interesting photos - especially rare ones. but i think there is a limit to what we all do here...

Must be really private photos if he's published them in a book! I dont think putting a couple of pics on the web will lose him any sales if anything its good advertisement. BTW make sure you never tape a show off the tv as the producers havnt given you permission to do so.

Of Soldier. I'd say it be impossible to find one, as they were all recycled, but if there is one, it could fetch a bit.

Sirpad, do you seriously buy the book for the pictures inside? What stops anyone from wandering into a book shop and just taking a look at the photos right there? Be serious.

Operation Barras by William Fowler.
It's better for knowing the background of the conflict(s) in Sierra Leone. There's not that much info on the rescue as would had been expected.
You might be better getting a book called Operation Certain Death, it's on my wish list at moment.

why is the flag laying on the ground,do british not believe in not letting the flag touch the ground?
digrar

We just did the flag thing in another thread. They were using it as a signal to coalition aircraft so they wouldn't get shot up..... again. One of the patrols got shot up by a A10, so the flag became SOP.
With the lights being taped up it also helps if you accidently hit the lights at night so you don't get totaly compromised, horns are another thing to get disabled when you take cars into the field.
