Veteran US senator Ted Kennedy, 77, is to be awarded an honorary knighthood.
The Queen has agreed the honour for the brother of former US president John F Kennedy for services to the US-UK relationship and to Northern Ireland.
Gordon Brown is to formally announce the award during his address to both houses of Congress on Wednesday.

Generally speaking I don't give a crap who they give these things to, particularly honorary ones but this one bothers me a little - I imagine because the Kopechne family have to read about it.

Well his old man would never have got one for his actions / comments as the U.S. Ambassador at the start of W.W.2 very anti-British Aid.p-)

Don't forget his chivalrous behavior when that girl got raped by a member of his family in Florida back in the 90's.

IIRC, I think he was naked and drunk face down elsewhere in the house

those Kennedys are a classy lot...truly worthy of the title American royalty.

He was also quite chivalrous when he drunkenly drove his car, with an expired license, into the Chappaquid**** river and left his female passenger to die. His chivalry didn't end that night either. He displayed more of it when he never even contacted the police. A lowly science teacher and 15 year old boy discovered the car the next morning. How dare they try and go against the mighty Kennedys.

Of note is that the passenger didn't even drown. She suffocated in a small air pocket in the car.

Hence my reference to the Kopechne family in the first post.

I'd love to read an impartial assessment of Big Ted's opinions in regards to the IRA and the fundraising carried out in his state on the IRA's behalf during the decades he was in office.

Please let this be a sick joke. This cretin was an active supporter of Noraid, an organisation that raised funds amongst Irish Americans for the benefit of the IRA and his 'services to Northern Ireland' amounted to rabble rousing tours of the province designed to win votes back home amongst Irish Americans.
It just goes to show the state of modern Britain under NuLab that this would even be considered.

P.S. Would he even want a fricking gong from the Queen

I knew he'd called for a united Ireland back in the 70s but I was unaware of his involvement in NORAID?

Any Bling-Bling to detract from a tarnished reputation of a plastic paddy is welcome

perhaps he has already a Noraid long service award from the "boys"

Perhaps I should have said alleged support. I can`t find any examples of direct involvement but it`s pretty clear that he was a sympathiser.

As a huge Royalist this cheapens the whole Knighthood thing for me, or maybe this is just the icing on top of the cake :(

Oh please, by British standards of debauchery among the rich and priviledged, Ted is a choirboy.

He would have had to have been fingerbanging an 8 year old boy whilst wearing a bra and panties, a noose around his neck, and f*cking a Nazi midget as he drove off that bridge in order to even be mentioned in dispatches.

Chappaquid**** is the least of his transgressions. History will label him a traitor, fool and murderer.

Guess this doesn't matter then, because it's "honorary"

U.S. Constitution - Article 1 Section 9

Section 9:
No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.

Congress may not grant any title of nobility No civil officer may, without the consent of Congress, accept any emolument, office or title from a foreign ruler or state. However, a U.S. citizen may receive foreign office before or after their period of public service.

Perhaps Brown should now also announce an honorary knighthood for Colonel Gaddaffi for his services to peace in Northern Ireland. Brown has shown the contempt he holds for his own countrymen today.

Knighthoods both honorary and actual are handed out like candy.
