Well he just got his MARPAT kilt. It was sent to him by members of a Marine discussion board, after reading his story. MOTIVATING!!

Mission Accomplished! 1stSgt Farr has received his KILT and he finds it “AWESOME”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1stSgt Farr came by my shop at 1400 today to take possession of his new MarPat Digital Kilt. His words were “Awesome” when he saw it for the first time. When asked if he would mind putting it on for pictures, he was more than happy to.

I talked to the 1stSgt for about an hour and he is a great guy. It also turns out that he only lives about four doors down from me in base housing, so we will be hoisting a few brews when we get back. He is extremely proud of his Marines and their accomplishments while here in Iraq. He loves being able to play for them and they in turn love him. When he asked his Marines if they would mind his wearing a kilt, they responded with a resounding “Hell No, we WANT you to wear it.”

So far he has three desert camouflage kilts, but he said that this one is by far the nicest. He especially likes the pockets on it as they work perfectly for securing his pistol. The design is traditional and he like that very much.

He wants to thank everyone on the MODF for all of their support and for the wonderful gift that you all have provided him with. Thank You, Marines, Friends and Family!

1/5 had planned to have their memorial service here before rotating back to the states, but they have decided to hold it back at Camp Pendleton on July 29th and the 1stSgt plans to wear his new kilt for it.

Below are the pictures that we snapped. He was so proud that he wore the kilt back to his billeting area with a huge smile on his face.

Oh man, you're frickin hillarious.

Its made from official MARPAT material (not a copy). And if I remember correcty it was made by a Kilt maker in Scotland.
And no the USMC does not have an "official" MOS for Pipers, although it is in the works.

They don't have (to my knowledge) a Marine Pipe Band such as some Commonwealth Regiments do.

I'm in my regiment's pipe band and would like a CADPAT kilt :P

No the person who made that, Guy Cramer, is a total f*ckin quack. All his "patterns" are made from playing around in photoshop. He writes sel-serving articles (in the third person, as if someone wrote it praising him) rambling about his 'achievements.'

He's a nut, don't buy into the crap on his site. He just got reamed out on army.ca from people calling bull**** on him.

Here's the thread if you want to see for yourself:

If its not Scottish its crap!

That is freakin awesome.

My grandfather was in Scottish Rite and played the pipes. When he kicks it I get his pipes. May never learn to play, but cool to have nonetheless.

They don't, I don't quite remember the contents of the article about that specific Marine but he's unique in the sense that he does play the pipes...so it is not a common thing in the USMC. Their band doesn't have any pipers.

Great kilt though!

Update.

Media, public response overwhelm him

July 6, 2004
BY MARISOL BELLO
DETROIT FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Detroit's bagpipe-playing, kilt-sporting Marine 1st Sgt. Dwayne Farr has become something of a minor celebrity these days.

Since news reports published around the world featured the leatherneck from the city's east side wearing a kilt and wailing the Marine Corps Hymn on his bagpipes for battle-weary troops in Fallujah, Iraq, the calls from the media and private citizens have not stopped.

He even has his own spokeswoman assigned to handle the inquiries.

Many of the callers want to honor Farr's wish for a desert-camouflage kilt to replace the red, blue and green plaid one he wore on the field.

Boy, did he get his wish.

So far, the career military man has received five kilts -- including a tri-color camouflage one sent by the Detroit Free Press -- and a sixth is on its way.

In an e-mail from the front, Farr, 38, said he was surprised by the reaction his story generated. He said he took the bagpipes to Iraq at the request of his commanders.

"From the battlefields of Iraq, out of the blue, I have brought attention to our Corps. It is good attention," he wrote.

He said he has received two brown-camouflage kilts, the tri-color kilt sent by the Free Press and two marine desert-pattern kilts. Among others, the kilts were sent by a TV station in Philadelphia, a private citizen in Idaho and a Baltimore charity made up of people of Scottish heritage.

He wrote that he tried out one of the kilts and walked by several Marines. "They were totally motivated by the sight," he said.

Gunnery Sgt. Kristine Scarber, the Marine Corps spokeswoman who handles inquiries related to Farr, said he has been phenomenal in keeping up the morale of the troops.

"These Marines are in the heat of battle," she said. "They need to stay motivated. If what it takes is your 1st sergeant walking around in a kilt, playing the Marine Corp Hymn, then that's what it takes."

Like Farr, his wife and sons in California were taken aback by all the attention.

"It's amazing how that blew up," said his wife, Roxanne. "He received lots of e-mails."

Roxanne Farr said she has only spoken to her husband a handful of times over the last two months , but she knows he's still playing the bagpipes for his fellow Marines.

Right now though, she and the couple's two sons are looking forward to Farr's return after his 6-month absence. Farr is expected to leave Iraq this month -- bagpipes, kilts and all.

"It's going to be really nice to have him home," she said.

Moughoun the Irish Defence forces (and the RIR) use the Uillean pipes not the same beast as the bladder bagpipe favoured by scots

It would be alright if the kilt was made like the traditional kilts,to me it looks stupid and is nothing more than a gimmick, there should be somrthing like 7 -12 yards of material in a kilt, and there should be a certain number of folds at the rear, having worn worn most of my life in and out of Military service, this falls way short of a kilt.
Nice idea and concept mind you.
As a fellow piper I admire this guy,on my next rotation I'm also bringing my Pipes to Baghdad......Cheilidh's galore!!
