US Army uses Israeli bullets
Friday 25 June 2004, 6:20 Makka Time, 3:20 GMT
US officials called the use of Israeli bullets a 'sensitive topic'
Israeli-made bullets bought by the US Army should be used for training only, not for combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, US lawmakers have told army generals.
Since the army has other stockpiled ammunition, "by no means, under any circumstances should a round (from Israel) be utilised," said Representative Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii on Thursday - the top Democrat on a House of Representatives Armed Services subcommittee with jurisdiction over land forces.
The US Army contracted with Israel Military Industries Ltd. in December for $70 million in small-calibre ammunition.
It is unclear whether Abercrombie was addressing the possibility of Israeli bullets having been used in current Iraq and Afghanistan combat operations or simply suggesting future engagement rules.
Two possible suppliers
The Israeli firm was one of only two worldwide that could meet US technical specifications and delivery needs, said Brigadier General Paul Izzo, the army's programme executive officer for ammunition.
The other was East Alton, Illinois-based Winchester Ammunition, which also received a $70 million contract.
"There's a sensitivity that I think all of us recognise," Representative Curt Weldon told the army witnesses, including Major General Buford Blount, who led US troops that captured Baghdad in April 2003.
"There's a sensitivity that I think all of us recognise"
Curt Weldon,
US House Representative
Blount, now the army's assistant deputy chief of staff, said they had sufficient small calibre ammunition - 5.56mm, 7.62mm and .50 calibre - to conduct current operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
Inventory strained
But taken together with training needs, the US had strained its production facilities, he testified.
"To fight a major combat operation in another theatre will require the army to impose restrictions on training expenditures and to focus current inventory and new production on combat operations," Blount said.
He also said that the army's needs will grow to about 1.5 billion to 1.7 billion rounds a year in coming years.
"In the near-term, balancing training requirements with current operational needs is a manageable risk-mitigation strategy," Blount said.
The Army does not want to repeat its history of building capacity during wartime "only to dismantle it in peacetime," Blount added.

I don't care who Israel sell ammo to but the US military should where ever possible use US made ammo for the simple reason that it keeps Americans in jobs and if ammo is in short supply it should be sourced from other NATO stockpiles even if it is to be used in non NATO actions.

god imagine the Arabs wouldn't want to be shot by the Americans due to being infected by Israeli ammo.... :D
In the end what does it matter...??? The bullet would get u anyway and kill the enemy is a good bullet in my books :D

I don't care who Israel sell ammo to but the US military should where ever possible use US made ammo for the simple reason that it keeps Americans in jobs and if ammo is in short supply it should be sourced from other NATO stockpiles even if it is to be used in non NATO actions. The problem is that the U.S. ammo factories are already strained to its limit so buying from Israel is NOT loosing any U.S. jobs.
Secondly if they need some more and cant get the rest in the U.S. they should get from Israel, hell that’s one of the reasons why we are allies and why the U.S. gives us aid (well here it also benefits the U.S. for that aid must be spent back in the U.S. and thus that too keeps and creates more American jobs....but I digress ;) ) for its known that the U.S. has storage faculties in Israel for its use if need be and has maintenance deals in Israel if they need any maintenance and yes if the U.S. needs ammo it should damn well have every right to go get it from the closest ally that has the quality ammo it needs and that’s Israel.
This whole Arab sensitivity thing is absurd and wrong and IMO the U.S. should ignore it.........I mean if they are so concerned about the bullets wait till they find out that some soldiers there are Jews, or that there are tons of other military products that the U.S. uses there that are Israeli invented or made as it is....the horror rofl
Lastly if we Jews can use the K98 even with all the history that it comes with, well I think the Arabs or the U.S "lefties" have no business decrying the U.S. use of "Jewish" bullets, when it doesn’t even come close to the sensitivity of the K98 and what we faced.
gees this is whole thing is getting absurd already

Do you know why they asked from IMI to make their bullets? Because you have a shortage, the american company is not making enough bullets.
The second reason is that only IMI and the american company fit the US requirments (quality).

That is not the reason why we are considering Isreali made 5.56.
Lethality testing has shown that IMIs versions of the M855 ammunition perform differently.

Ammo at the civilian level hasn't been strained but I think the US military only has like one ammo factory(?) over here and that's what's been causing a problem, now I'm sure if the bullets were greased in pigs fat then I could see the media having something to cry about where as I think it would be fitting ;)

Lethality testing has shown that IMIs versions of the M855 ammunition perform differently.hey trust me you wont see me arguing on the great quality of Israeli ammo ;) :D , and indeed I agree that is also a reason why they are chosen, however I am simply responding to what the article says and also what a poster said here about losing American jobs and well Acc. to that article that was the initial post in this thread, one of the major reasons was due to there being insufficient supply of ammo to the military and the IMI ones were to take up the slack and all I said if true well that doesn’t mean that any American jobs are lost to that.

Good post IDFM, right to the point
If I may add a little thing, The USA are not the only one to use the IMI 55 grain 223, France (yes, FRANCE) bought quantities of this ammo because it`s simply good, i heard that holland did the same.
Another thing, in Israel we do`nt only use the IMI round, but a bunch of rounds marked "T Z Z x year", the X stating for what i take as a month number but i might be wrong about that.
i`d like to point out that I was often procured with FN and "W C C" marked 7.62mm rounds, the FN seeming to be obviously from FN hertzal of belgium, but once agin i might be wrong and would welcome any documented correction ;) .
In any way, an other debate for nothing, when oriented media, specialist of political correctness (in my non PC way i call them flies ****ers) and "arab sensitivities are working for the same purpose, something is definitely wrong.
