On 23 III 1944 in Markowa (Poland), a patrol of German police came to the house of Wiktoria and Józef Ulm (Ulma), where they found 8 Jews, members of the Szall and Goldman families. First the Germans executed all the Jews. Then they shot down pregnant Wiktoria and her husband. When the 6 children began to scream at the scene of dead bodies of their parents, Jozef Kokott, a German policeman killed them.
Markowa was a Polish village near Lancut. During World War II many families hid their Jewish neighbours to help them survive the Holocaust. It is estimated that at least 17 Jews survived the war in Markowa. Seven members of Weltz family were hidden in a barn of Dorota and Antoni Szylar. Jakub Einhorn were hidden by Jan and Weronika Przybylak and Jakub Lorbenfeld family were hidden by Michal Bar. Two girls from Reisenbach family were initially hidden by Stanislaw Kielar, before joining the rest of 5 members family in the house of Julia and Józef Bar. Righteous Gentiles came in all shapes and sizes. Some were industrialists called Oksar and others were simple peasants who showed real courage.

Exact number is not known but it is estimated that minimum 15.000 Poles were murdered by Germans for helping Jews. Has they any trees in Yad Vashem? No. Why? Good question.

6000+ Poles are honoured as "Righteus among the nations". From total 22.000. Why so little?

About 150.000 Jews, if not much more, survived Holocaust in Poland due to help of Poles. As helping Jews in Poland occupied by Germans was extremely dangerous and difficult, for one Jew saved during whole WWII many Poles were engaged, often 2-4 families one after another. Jews were hidden typically in groups 3-5 persons. Lets say that to save 4 Jews during whole war, 20 Poles were needed. So it is theoretical ratio of 5 Poles engaged for 1 saved Jew. 5:1. So, 150.000 saved Jews means 750.000 Poles.

Where are "Righteus among the nations" medallions and Yad Vashem trees for 750.000 Poles? Ha?
