Apparently the Turkish military hasn't been very happy with the HK33 series they adopted in 1999. Of an originally planned 500,000 (!), they had produced only 83,000 in 2008, and apparently wanted to stop then. Would someone know
1. Whether they actually DID stop in 2008, after they had received 83,000, or if MKE continue to make the weapon for Turkish forces (Jandarma or whatever)?
2. What their actual beef with the HK33 as made by MKE was -- reliability? Lack of rails for gadgets? Effectiveness as compared to their old 7.62x51mm rifles? Lack of coolness factor? Or what?
3. What they want to replace it with -- I read about the Mehmetcik-1. Is that going to be introduced on a large scale? In 5.56x45mm or 7.62x51mm?
Many thanks!
Cheers
