Follow the link below to have a look at the new version of the HK G36K put through trials with the Norwegian armed forces.
take me to the pics already! (http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~tomaslh/kilopapa/)
The new version features:
- 16" barrel (for better muzzle velocity/performance with M855/SS109)
- emergency iron sights on alu (not plastic) sight rail
- new type of forearm that fastens to the gas block
- new top forearm rail
- new buttstock that both folds and is telescopic (prototype)
- added bolt release
- improved mag release
It'll be interesting to see what rifle is chosen to take over for the HK G3 when it is taken out of service in a couple of years.

I think it is known as the G36KV.

Well, that is not entirely correct. All G36Ks sold to the norwegians (KJK for instance) are marked KV, which stands for Kort Versjon (short version). At least I've been told so. The old "regular" version of the G36Ks I've seen have all been marked KV.

Is it true that the modifications on that G36 came from the XM8 program?
Like it has been announced on hkpro? http://www.hkpro.com/

Both the bolt release and mag release are taken directly from the XM8. The stock is completely different though. Like the XM8 the new version does no longer feature a freefloating barrel. Hopefully the accuracy won't suffer (not that I've heard bad things about the non-freefloating barrel of the XM8, but anyhow).
I think I'll have to join the army again if they decide on the G36KV .. :)

With the buttstock folded over the ejection port, he's wondering where the brass goes (if fired with the buttstock folded).

Looks good! Where can I order one? :D
Interesting.....I wonder why they would take what is essentially a good design feature (free floating barrel) and delete it.......First thing I would think of might be cost of manufacture but I cant really see this being the case........
This is the first I have heard of the XM8 not having a free floating barrel.....Can anyone answer the question of why they would eliminate that feature from the rifle.......after all it is based off the G-36 which hasa free floating barrel right??

I remember seeing the XM8 disassembled (but I'm no firearms expert) and it didn't seem like it didn't have a free floating barrel. Even the digital photos of the improvements on the XM8 didn't show anything otherwise. Are you sure the XM8 doesn't have a free floating barrel?

durability is my guess. but never heard any complaints about the forarm other then heating up too fast.

Does anyone have any pictures of the XM8 folding retractable stock? I remember seeing an XM8 with it.

You should get our ak5:s and Gripens.
(Wouldn't surprise me if you are as treacherous as the fins and get f18s).

looks good... it does look like the modifications could be influenced by the XM-8.

The forearm of the XM8 doesn't bolt fast to the gasblock like the new G36K, but I have a picture in my mind of the gasblock having a recess that the forarm fits into. But I might be wrong - wouldn't be the frist time.
The mods are clearly influenced by the XM8, but are made to the G36 as a result of requirements made by us norwegians. It'll be interesting to see if this version shows up in other parts of the world also. What it does show imho, is that HK is willing to listen to their customers and modify existing version to suit their specific needs. I can't remember Colt having done anything radical to the M16 for the past 40 or so years...

well the m16 never had the problems with the hold open and the mag release as the hk so that is not problem from the begining. and they have made changes. they made a colapsable stock so i guess that fits the change hk made to the g36 stock, and they also redesigned the handguards i believe more then one with the m4 having double heat shields. they also made the flat top version as well. and they also modified the m16s to fire "bursts" instead of having a full automatic mode at the request of the military. they also improove small parts all the time, but often times the military does not want it because its just another part to stock. they also had a piston driven m16 30 years before the "ground breaking" hk upper jumped on the scene. so colt has done just as much to improove their weapon as hk has done if not more, remeber they have had 40 years to do so, compared to about 7 from hk. plus colt is in the scar trials which would mean they have improoved their weapon once again.

Just think of the MP5/10 - it was developed and produced only because the FBI demanded a MP5 chambered in 10mm.
