SAN JOSE, Calif. - Less than a week after the launch, Intel Corp. said Friday it's recalling some of its latest chip sets after the discovery of a manufacturing flaw that could cause computers to crash or fail to boot.
Most of the problem chips were still in the hands of computer and motherboard manufacturers, said Bill Calder, an Intel spokesman.
"The good news is we think almost none of the impacted product — or very little — has reached the end customer because we caught it early and have been working with our customers to replace all the lots with non-affected product," he said.
On Monday, Intel launched the chip sets, formerly code-named Grantsdale and Alderwood, touting them as "among the most significant PC platform changes in a decade," according to a news release issued at the time.
The 915 G/P and 925X chip sets, as they're officially called, coordinate communication between the computer's microprocessor and the rest of the system. The latest models integrate high-quality audio, video and a faster data highway.
Calder said the problem arose because a thin film applied to one of the chips during manufacturing was not removed. It was discovered by one of Intel's customers, though he did not know whether it was a PC or motherboard maker.
"We're working with them to replace the defective products," he said, adding that only some lots are affected by the flaw and Intel has a tracking system to identify where the problem chips were shipped.
Citing the "quiet period" before Intel's earnings, Calder also declined to specify how many units must be returned or the financial impact of the problem. Intel intends to publish its earnings release on July 13.
Shares of Intel, the world's largest semiconductor company, fell 17 cents to close at $27.78 Friday on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

True, but Centrino is a pretty good mobile chip, even if their desktop chips leave a lot to be desired.

Isnt the Extreme hyper threading chip the fastest on the market?...cost you an arm and a leg though.

I switched from an AthlonXP 2100 to a Pentium 4 3.0ghz last year, and the performance on this thing has been very lackluster. Next time I upgrade my chip it's definitely going to be an AMD.

I recomend the AMD 64 to everyone, i just got one for my new PC (pics coming later :D)
Heres one for 185 which is an awsome price, and i love it, way better then my old P4 3.4ghz Intel, it runs Games like Far Cry and Unreal tournament 04 with no lag at all

Slower AMD chips usually run better than faster Intel chips. My 3.0ghz P4 really runs worse than my old AthlonXP 2100+ which was 1.7ghz.

If your 3.0ghz P4 runs worse than you athlon then there is something wrong with your P4 comp.

Trust me, I built it myself. I even rebuilt it and wiped the HD when I saw that it wasn't working all that well. Intel chips simply don't perform compared to AMD.

I agree with Falco, something must have been wrong with your chip. Theres no way it should be slower than a xp2100.
