**Images forum would have been more appropriate for this topic; ALso topic shouldve been titled "2 Desert BDU Versions in Somalia" or something like that
Desert BDU
The desert battle dress uniform (DBDU) is authorized for year-round wear on duty by all personnel when issued as organizational clothing and prescribed by the commander. The color of desert terrain varies from pink to blue, depending on the minerals in the soil and the time of the day. No color or combination of colors matches all deserts. Patches of uniform color in the desert are usually 10 times larger than those in wooded areas. These conditions led to the development of a three color pattern DBDU, which replaced the six color DBDU used in Desert Storm. The six color "chocalate chip" pattern will be authorized for wear until current stock is depleted and the uniforms becomes unserviceable

Impressive; What I dindt know is that "The color of desert terrain varies from pink to blue, depending on the minerals in the soil and the time of the day" VERY IMPRESSIVE-- Color changes depending on soil and time of day-- Exellent!

I'm pretty sure most of the higher ranked officers got to wear the new patterns. That's what the picture suggests.

I heard a story don't know if its true or knot the chop chip design was based on the stony desert you find in new mexico. when the troops got to Saudi found it was bugger all use in a sandy desert :D
Mind you the brits did worse MOd in the 1970s decided we would'nt fight in deserts anymore and flogged all our desert uniforms to the Iraqis :P
SO WE HAD TO COME UP WITH A UNIFORM THAT DID'NT LOOK LIKE OUR OLD ONE

I always assumed that the US military supply system simply doesn't work at the speed of light.A cousin's reserve unit was activated at the start of the war and he didn't get his utilities for two months. Then another month for his lbv.....course that observation falls into the classic "I know someone who knows someone" category,eh?

I believe the 3-color was the new patern at the time. So new, that some couldn't get it before stocks ran out.
Much like the Marines today. Some have the new MARPAT camo but others still use the 3-color and woodland, simply because its new and it will take time to equip every marine with the new uniform.
