Haredim for the win..

JERUSALEM – Two women serve in Israel's new Cabinet, but some Israelis would rather not see them.

Newspapers aimed at ultra-Orthodox Jewish readers tampered with the inaugural photograph of the Cabinet, erasing ministers Limor Livnat and Sofa Landver.

Ultra-Orthodox newspapers consider it immodest to print images of women.

The daily Yated Neeman digitally changed the photo, moving two male ministers into the places formerly occupied by the women.

The weekly Shaa Tova simply blacked the women out, in a photo reprinted Friday by the mainstream daily Maariv.

No response was available from the two papers.

During the election, campaign posters featuring female candidate Tzipi Livni were defaced near ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods.

Ultra-Orthodox are just plain loons and it suprised me to hear how many of them there are in Israel. My brother used deal a lot with them and he got fairly friendly with a couple of them, they can be a bit funny about women as I know a girl who heard two of them insult her in Yiddish at a North London bus stop however she promptly fired back in both Yiddish and Hebrew with some heavy abuse. I guess you should never judge a book by it's cover or lack off in this case.:)

Sounds like (to me) those extreme 'ultra-orthodox' types are really no better than the Taliban or Islamists in how they view women. They need to take a good hard look at themselves (but they won't).

Thats going way too far man..

The ultra orthodox Jews aren't allowed to look at women other then their wives thats why they photoshop them out and stuff.....for example if at a wedding and a female is on stage to make a speech, the ultra orthodox remove themselves from the room to listen because of something to do with looking at another woman while married...

But yes.. ultra orthodox people are ****ing weird

Like synagogues with seperate 'women areas'? Where in the Torah does it say you cannot look at another woman while married (unless, I suppose, they have 'impure' thoughts about other women).

That's jut it. There's a strain of obesessive/compulsive behavior in Judaism. The commandment or stricture is to acquit yourself modestly, but what began as an honest effort to observe a commandment became a set of ever increasing restrictions that would also avoid a chance of possibly coming close to unintentionally violating the commandment.

The equivalent would be, you don't drive through a red light. In order to truly avoid breaking that obligation, we won't drive. What's equally frustrating is that there's a core of secular Jews who are willing to put up with their shennanigans and even give them money because it's as if they're observant for us too. Give me the Amish anyday, they work.

Some people follow the idea, "If a little bit is better, then a whole lot is whole lot better".

I'm in Jerusalem now, I thought the haredim were a pretty straight set. The first guy to offer me a joint here was a tzitzit wearing haredi...go figure?

Doesn't this mean that they couldn't go out in public? I'm assuming the rule must leave some room for the inevitable sighting of other women in day to day activities.

I assume you are referring to the Mishnah and the Talmud, Jewish books written by our ancestors to help us understand and implement the mitzvot into our lives in a practical way. Yes, some of the laws have become outdated, given that microwaves, motor vehicles, cameras and various other luxuries didn't exist in the 3nd century(when these oral laws were finally recorded in contrast to the written laws ie. Torah), however, these commentaries, not necessarily restrictions, were aimed at those who could not fully grasp the nature of the mitzvot, without as you said violating the commandment. I think one needs to remember, as much as Judaism is a religion, it is a lifestyle governed by a body of laws to help us live a moral and righteous life. If there are some out there who choose to take these laws to the extreme then that is unfortunately their right, so long as they do not enforce their will upon those who do not choose to live the lifestyle in the same manner as themselves. I think one needs to be mindful of calling someone 'crazy' for living their lives as they see fit. You only therefore lower yourself to the standard to which you are attacking.:|

I am not sure the ultra-orthodox would appreciate you calling them a sect, given they pretty much believe every other movement in Judaism is not at all Jewish. And I am not sure even as a progressive Jew I like you saying I am a sect member. No, I don't think Jews execute women or anything else, but there are some out there who would disagree, given the latest crisis in Israel and it's not nice being on the firing end of someone's comment about it. Calling Jews sectarians I believe only enflames people's misguided beliefs about Judaism, and trust me, there is alot of that going around.
