Mounting optics onto Mini-14s

My cousin is getting a Mini-14 soon, and wanted to know if the only method of mounting optics was from a railed mount that screw onto the side like this:

the ranch rifle has built in scope ring bases
i do have a mini w/ the type of scope attachment and it works well
had it set up years ago by an excellent gunsmith friend
it took us a couple of hours to locktite the small set screws that rest on top of the reciever - its still maintains zero to this day
(until the barrel heats up and shots start spreading out)
post again if he goes with this type- mines scoperings only but i was thinkin about the rail as it gives one more optics options

I have that setup and it sucks balls, in cold weather or after excessive rounds it will loosen and lose it's zero.

Use a rail or stick with iron sights like myself.

if you have the other model I am with LAWB, my buddy has that type of mount, and it sucks.

the trigger location relative to the pistol grip is wierd and uncomfortable on this one, imho.
