Wallabies cut England to pieces 26/06/04
Australia notch up a half century of points
Australia secured their first win over England since 1999 - and the Cook Cup - by putting the tourists to the sword by recording an impressive 51-15 victory in Brisbane on Saturday, with Clyde Rathbone making the most of a very late call-up by collecting a hat-trick of tries.

Just got off the blower to a mate in Melbourne - he says we were a beaten team getting on the pitch, which is a fair expression. Well played to the Aussies - sort your lives out England ( sob, sniffle....)

Wallabies beat England with vengeance
9:43PM 26/6/2004
Story by: AAP
South African-born Clyde Rathbone was Australia's accidental hero with a three-try effort to down England 51-15 in tonight's Rugby World Cup final rematch at Suncorp Stadium.
Rathbone, one of only two starting Wallabies not involved in last November's Cup final loss, was a last-minute inclusion after Wendell Sailor broke down in the pre-match warm-up.
Sailor's sorrow at a strained hamstring quickly turned into the 22-year-old Brumbies flyer's joy as he finished off two inspired Australian backline moves in the 19th and 40th minutes.
He then backed up at a crucial moment in the second half to score a brilliant individual try with a deft grubber and toe ahead to gift the home side a 29-15 lead.
The win put a trophy into the Wallabies "empty" cabinet with the Cook Cup, the symbol of Australia-England rugby supremacy, returning south after a five year absence.
A converted try midway through the second half to replacement hooker Jeremy Paul, created by man of the match Joe Roff who scored 21-points, killed off the tourists.
The Wallabies found the ruthless streak Eddie Jones had been asking for to romp to their second-ever biggest win over England.
World Cup revenge wasn't the motivation for the Wallabies but few in the record 52,492-strong Suncorp crowd who cheered on all six tries against the sloppy world champions seemed to care.
The victory, earnt largely on the back of a 21-8 first-half, sent England crashing to its third straight thumping on a forgettable Australasian tour.
Fullback Roff gave the last pass for Rathbone's two first-half tries.
The first came after Matt Giteau handed off a deft inside ball to send Lote Tuqiri away.
Roff's ability to bamboozle the outside defence after latching on to a fine Stephen Larkham cut-out gave Rathbone an easy run to the line 15 seconds before the half-time hooter.
There were concerns for the Wallabies however with Paul, who finished with two tries after earlier in the day battled through a fitness test to play on a bung knee, struggling with his line-out throwing.
He messed up three of his first five throws, including two in vital attacking positions, after a dazed Brendan Cannon left the field following a marginally high tackle from lock Simon Shaw.
Despite allowing the English to peg back after skipping away to 16-3 and 21-8 leads, Eddie Jones' demand to regain a ruthless streak and not go into "cruise control" seemed to strike a chord in the second half.
The Wallabies piled on four tries in 15 minutes after English skipper Lawrence Dallaglio strolled over for his side's second try in the 48th minute.
Lote Tuqiri's 67th minute effort was a stand out as he baffled four defenders as he hit the line at pace 25m out from the goal line.
Sailor's early injury blow meant Australia went into the match with a top-heavy reserves bench with five forwards and only two backs but it didn't seem to matter.
It helped back-up halfback Matt Henjak gain his first Test cap, playing the last 10 minutes on the wing after Rathbone was replaced.

Australia v SA,
Saturday, Aug 7
Australia v NZ,
Saturday, Aug 14
S Africa v NZ,
Saturday, Aug 21
SA v Australia,
To be fair to the Poms it was their last game in a 10 month season, although they probably wouldn't be happy with 3 defeats in a row to finish off the year.

Well done Australia, and to a lesser extent New Zealand and South Africa. Big wins, again.
Tri-Nations will be a good spectacle this year :) My prediction is the All Blacks to take it, Aus second and SA third (again). However.... I think the Springboks should at least be mildly competitive for a change.
Damn, I wish Rathbone hadn't buggered off to Oz - damn fine player that. Our weakness right now is the midfield, we could certainly have used a class player like him.

Got your engagement party coming up mate? Surely you can't be planning a All Blacks victory party :P .
Reminds me of my sisters wedding reception over on the North Island. Wallabies were playing the All Blacks and no one showed up to the reception untill the game was over. Mum had decked the reception centre out in green and gold and the bloody All Blacks got up and won.
Sorry but I'm going to have to go ahead and call bollocks on this thread title. Australia are a great team, how does losing to them (Even losing heavily) make England chumps?

Hey, I'm still cheerin' over the Brumbies SUPER 12 win a lil' while back. . . now the Wallabies get up over the "old enemy" :D

People rave about Wilkinson but it's not down to him, don't get me wrong, he's a great player, there's obviously his kicking and tactical awareness not to mention he's one of the best tacklers in the world but frankly we miss Martin Johnson more. Add to that not having Neil Back, Jason Robinson, Ben Kaye, Jason Leanord and Lewis Moody and it starts to add up. There's no denying that we're missing certain players but the simple fact is that right now New Zealand and Australia both have much better teams available.
Oh, one trick ponies? Are we forgetting the winning streak that led into the world cup which included repeated wins against Southern Hemisphere teams? ;)

Hey, I didn't see that pretty boy Jason Robinson playing for the Poms on Saturday night. Back in like 1996 he was in town on a footy tour and tried to hit on my then girlfriend until me and a few mates from my section stepped in not knowing who he was. . then we ignored all our gals and talked to him all night getting pissed! LOL :)

Thats one of Englands fualts they have a top notch !st tier of players up not to many proven players waiting in the wings if anyone is injured dropped form the 1st XV. Australia and NZ being such a competative gruop have all types of players that have interantional experience and talent to fill in if the 1st player faulters. (like replacing Sailor with Mortlock either one is proven and devastating). Australia is missing some of their talent right now/
