The "R level" are Type 033 Romeo Class (http://www.sinodefence.com/navy/sub/033.asp), a much improved version of the Soviet descendent of WWII-vintage German U-Boats. Though they are still in service, I'd rcall that sometimes ago one of these sank during an exercise. But unfortunately, all crews onboard sank with it...

Actually the first submarine that China imported from Russia was W class:

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/3800/js0907013s.jpg

Then followed by "R" class. China also copies R class with the blueprint provided by Russia. The PLA's SN is 035. At the peak time, China owned >50 R class:

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/6971/2242.jpg

China improved the R class in 1980s' and called it Ming Class. Now Ming Class is the backborne of the PLA submarine:

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/4892/28_901.jpg

This is the latest improved version of Ming class:

http://military.china.com/zh_cn/blade/zg/hj/mj/018.jpg

China improved one R class and equiped it with C-801 anti-ship missile. It was called Wu Han class(053C):

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/8530/035C.jpg

China also import one Golf class from Russia as the first ballistic missile submarine:

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/7518/20034181842148060.jpg
(from left to right: Golf class, Wu Han class, R class*2)

Song class(039) was designed by China in 1990s'. The early version has a ladder shape bridge on the hull:

http://military.china.com/zh_cn/blade/zg/hj/sj/aa.jpg
http://member.netease.com/~rxj/pic/song1.jpg

This is the latest version of Song class(039A) with a new designed bridge:

Two major accidents: one happened in 1959, a R class crashed with a frigate in the maneuver when it raised. This accident caused the death of 38 soliders. The other one just happend last year. No.361(Ming Class) submarine, due to the diesel engineer failure, caused the asphyxia of 70 crew.

cool, nice posts Bayonet.... you keep refering to your "chinese brothers". What if I want to be a chinese brother?!! Is it like joining a college fraternity or is some genetic predisposition required? :D ;)
Its good to have some input from China on the forum. I hope you will also contribute to the General Discussion section - your opinions are valuable because they represent a non-western opinion. It may help broaden perspectives, both yours and ours.

Nice page about the Kilo and other PLAN submarines: http://www.stormpages.com/jetfight/han_xia_kilo_song.htm . Pretty nice submarine. Very quiet diesel one it is.

Great info about PLAAF planes too. My personal favourite there would be the J-11/Su-27, quite a beautiful plane...

no matter how many soliders of PLA, if you divide it by 1.4 billion, it will be a very very small number. Considering China's population, I don't think PLA is really big.

Well, it is hard to explain to you since it is more philosophic question.

Have you ever read <The Art of War> written by the famous Chinse militarist Sun Zi about 2000 years ago? Sun Zi thought the highest ambit of the War is "To Win Without Fighting".

And you can avoid war only if you have a overwhelming military power.

Hope you can understand what I mean. ;) ;)

In Europe it is almost 20mm or 27mm - the Americans uses 20mm and the russians 30mm-Guns for their planes. What's with Chinese fighters?

Hell ya!

This is a f*** sexy Ship! Like russians Frigates and Destroyes you build them very flat and.... don't know the right word, they look really sexy to me! Not the german-bulk-design

This is the new 052B Frigates. Jiangnan Shipyard is currently building two new 6500t class multipurpose missile destroyers for the PLA Navy. The ships, reportedly designated as Type 052B, are likely based on the hull design of the Type 051B (Luhai class) destroyer, but fitted with Russian surface-to-air missile (SAM) and fire-control radar systems.

Compared to the PLA Navy’s current Type 052 (Luhu class) and Type 051B (Luhai class) destroyers, the new Type 052B destroyers possess much better air defence capabilities, which comprises two Russian-made SA-N-12 Grizzly medium-range SAM launchers and two indigenously developed Type 730 close in weapon systems (CIWSs). Despite the lack of more sophisticated systems such as the phased array radar and vertical launch system (VLS), the destroyers are generally capable of providing limited medium-range fleet air defence.

PROGRAMME

The Type 052B is the PLA Navy’s yet another major procurement programme following the purchase of two Russian-built Sovremenny class missile destroyers in 1999 and 2000. The existence of programme like this suggests that despite the warship purchase deals with Russia, China is unlikely to depart from the self-reliance policy to reply on domestic shipbuilders to design and build modern and sophisticated warships. In fact, imported technologies are being integrated into indigenous designs to save the development costs and time.

The two ships have been built at Jiangnan Shipyard, Shanghai since 2000. The first ship (pennant number 168) was launched in May 2002, followed by the second ship (pennant number 169) in January 2003. Currently the two ships are stationed in Jiangnan Shipyard for weapon and other equipment installations. If the serial numbers of these ships are genuine, they will be deployed in the PLA Navy South Sea Fleet.

DESIGN

The displacement of the ship is about 6,500 tonne, which is roughly comparable to the Russian-made Sovremenny class. Compared to the Type 051B (Luhai class) destroyer introduced in 1999, the Type 052B apparently incorporates even more stealth features -- the sides of the vessel are sloped to minimise radar cross section, surfaces have been coated in radar-absorbent paint and the profiles of external features have been reduced. There is a stern helicopter flight deck and a hanger which can accommodate two Russian Ka-28 Helix-A ASW/SAR helicopters.

WEAPONS

The main air defence weapon systems onboard the Type 052B are two (1 front and 1 rear) Russian-made SA-N-12 Grizzly medium-range SAM launchers, guided by four Front Dome indication radars and a Top Plate 3D air-search radar. For short range air defence, two indigenous Type 730 CIWS similar to the Dutch Goalkeeper are located on both sides behind the bridge.

The 100mm single-barrel main gun on the front deck seems to be a copy of the French Creusot-Loire 100 mm gun. Four 4-cell YJ-83 (C-803) anti-ship missile launchers are fitted at midship behind the funnel. In addition, four unique multiple rocket launchers (MRLs) are fitted on the front deck to launch decoys, antisubmarine rockets, and land-attack ammunitions.

PROPULSION

The propulsion system in the form of CODOG consists of two Ukraine-made DA80/DN80 gas turbines and two indigenous diesels.

And that is a very nice Plane... a fighter? Or a Fighterbomber? Looks like a modern F-16 Pendant *lol* Little question: Which caliber do you use to outfit your Fighters? The fixed weapon on the J-10 is a 23 mm internal cannon.

The J-8B is equipped with a two-barrel 23 mm Type 23-III (a copy of the Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-23L) cannon

The J-8 is equiped with a twin-barrel 23 mm Type 23-III cannon.

The J-7e is equiped with two 30 mm Type 30-1 cannon with 60 rounds per gun

The J-7 is equiped with one 30 mm cannon.

First of all, it is not "Invade". It was at mare liberum. Even the Japan didn't claim it was a "Invade".

Is this a K8 off the Egyptian production line? Also, how does this plane compare to Western and Russian trainers (in terms of cost, maintenence, up keep, and capabilities)?

Yeah, Egypt produce K-8E under licence.

SPECIFICATIONS

Crew: Two
Wingspan: 9.63 m
Length: 11.6 m
Height: 4.21 m
Maximum take-off weight: 4,332 kg
Maximum weapon payload: 1,000 kg
Maximum speed: 800 km/h
Range: Ferry range 2,140 km
Service ceiling: 13,600 m

I think K-8 trainer is on the same level of L-159B,eagle, MB339 and Mig-AT.

How come fighter pilot dun wear G-suit?
Maybe because he don't need it for a training exercice.
If they followed the russian Pilot recruitment procedures, then he doesn't need a G suit up to 5 G. The russian procedures was to test each phisical candidate to become pilot to a serie of tests. A candidate MUST have 5G natural resistence to be accepted.

How does it compare to other SMG?

My guess is that the stated effective range is probably less than the 200 meters quoted. Its a pistol cartridge subgun, just like any other, with possibly a longer barrel than most.

Having never shot the 7.62x25 Tokarev pistol cartridge I can only recite online and printed sources...so take it for what it is worth...

Crappy example...
Hornady 86gr FMJ
4.6 gr powder charge
1076 fps MV
8.1 f/s deviation
221 ft/lb energy

The best example...
85gr FMJ mag (Czech)
??? gr powder charge
1544 fps MV
10.7 ft/s deviation
450 ft/lb energy

So like "most" guns it sort of depends on what ammunition you use. Older Soviet 7.62x25 is considered highly "erratic" and VERY corrosive..as is a big a chunk of the Chinses stuff. There is also a lot of variation in the ammo. Some rounds are REALLY hot depending on what weapon it is to be used in (sort of like the difference between a Vickers .303 and the .303 used in Enfields. So be careful.

So, based on the information I have read, as a collector I would avoid it and anything of that caliber with possibly the exception of a the CZ 52 which is a "fairly" decent large frame handgun.

I think German subguns like the MP5 and UMP are probably a whole lot nicer and controllable and over all better designed...but are FAR more expensive for a law enforcement export market (even if the UMP was designed as a cheaper alternative to the MP5). Which may or may not matter.

The European PDWs are also comparable, such as the MP7 and the P90, both of which surpass the Type 79 in ballistics, penetration, and energy as well and ergonomics even though both shoot a much smaller round. The Chinese simply took an existing mass produced com-bloc cartridge and made their own gun to fit it.

Ultimately, I would hope the Chinese government would give their people the top of the line ammo, so the concerns for their national market are probably not even as dire as I make it seem to be.

I've been thinking. We have seen a lot of cool pictures of new stuff that the Chinese are equipping their forces with OR in the middle of R&D, but how much of it REALLY works? Also, what level of training have their troops received to integrate new systems within their military force structure.

My favorite comparison is with the IBCT being deployed in Iraq were we see a massive integration from a new battle rifle/carbine, to APC concepts, to tactical control and independent operations, to information gathering and assets (each Brigade has a large number of UAVs...that you would normally see at Division level).

Which is ultimately the issue. Pictures are great...I know I love seeing them and is obviously the category of the portion of the Forums...but just exactly how will all this stuff play out?

To echo Tane,

Ahhh ignorance is bliss.

First, this is a military PHOTOS forum. Now, I know most people have enough brain cells to scrape together to realize that the photos posted by the Chinese members of our forum...and those that are not Chinese but contributed (like myself)...are MILITARY photos.

I see that you, having joined a week or so ago and having only posted less than ten times may not realize that this what we do here...part of it at least...the big part.

I suggest you keep your trap shut and learn rather than jump in post inane comments and look like a jackass.

With that said...

You have something to learn form what is being posted here. For the longest period of time, China has been far behind the other world powers in terms of conventional military forces. Not to step of those of Chinese origins here, but Chi Com stuff was crap, period.

This was, in part a result of China focusing mostly on internal policing and security issues and acquiring a large nuclear capacity. Around 1979 China realized that its conventional military deficiencies were getting worse, as proved by their failed invasion of Vietnam and thus began focusing on a new style of development.

In 1985 they started "zaoda, dada, da he zhanzheng" translated, literally, if I am not mistaken as...an early war, an all-out war, and a nuclear war". Rather than focusing on one single arm the decided to tackle the whole deal and try to get it as well rounded as possible. Well, China's economy was in the crapper for a long time...you could probably say it finally got its head above water in the 90s. Which means it has the cash to actually start developing hi-tech, even if currently a generation behind us...example: The J-10 is a nice leap in aviation technology (thanks a lot Israel ;) ) but this is their, essentially, first F-15 or F-16. It is at least twenty years behind say...the F-22 and lacks the support to take advantage of its capabilities (one on one dogfighting is NOT what we are talking about here...but multi layered air doctrine which the CHinese lack almost as much as the do in Naval force projection).

It is however, a leap none the less. A big one. So what else is going on out there? Taiwan is a massive issue. China has never really looked at a multi-ocean navy and currently they can barely project into the Straits, but that is changing too. Their focus is STILL on the Straits, but they are no longer churning out SSN 688 (sorry guys, your Navy is CRAPFUL, period)...well possibly, since we know little about the ships other than look sort of high-tech and stealthy.

The point of all this is. Know thy enemy. I love the CHinese people, but I cannot stand their government and this forum lets me vent and discuss that a bit with the Chinese, as well as see some nice photos of their military and security forces. They have shared with us images that some of the members of this forum have NEVER seen simply because others focus, narrowly on European, American/Canadian, Russian, and/or Israeli. Well, hate to break it to you, low tech or not, China has a military, the largest in the world. Just because their jeeps look like pressed tin does not mean they cannot post.

So, repeat after me. "This is a MILITARY PHOTOS forum." "The Chinese members are posting MILITARY PHOTOS."

See it isn't THAT hard to understand. :D

You probably heard this rumor from some people from Taiwan.
Speaking Mandarin in Taiwan now is not political right, especially in the southern part of Taiwan. They got some paranoid to resist anything related to CHINA.

If the native Taiwanese successfully construct their "Republic of Taiwan", Madarin could be abandoned to be a National language.

Yeah, my High School offered it along with Russian and Portuguese, in addition to the normal French, Spanish, and German. We also had to take three years of Latin as well...yep, language skills were considered VERY important there...and it was a public school to boot!

With that said, in college, my first two years, I was a dual major..Chinese Language/Culture and Modern European/Military history....I guess you could have called it 2 majors and 2 minors since Ohio State did not offer a military or culture majors...they were more like concentrations. I was in Army ROTC trying to get into aviation (helicopters) and my uncle was waiting for me to finish to get me hired on to AAI (a defence contractor here in the United States) as their commercial helicopter production rep in China. Then China crushed the the Student Democracy movement in 1989 and massive cut backs in our military spending during Bush Sr. sent me in a different direction. So, I became a graphic designer.

Oh, and I have visited Taiwan, though it was in 1988. My girl friend at the time was first generation Taiwanese American and had family that still lived there. That was a interesting experience. I was never introduced as her boy friend...just a friend that came along to meet folks that spoke Chinese to get practice. Her family REALLY did not approve of her dating a white guy, so she kept it quiet.

Food was great of course and I had hoped to make it to the mainland at the time, but that was a hassle, so I never did.

Now, my language skills are lacking with ten or so years of not using it, except when we were doing some stuff for P&G when they were opening up their division in Osaka, Japan...a lot of paper products were being printed there and sent to China, believe it or not, and we handled all the package designs.

So, with that said...

Wo bu hui shua Zhongguo hua...much. I know my numbers (yi, ar, sen, su wu....yi-shi-ar etc) and enough to be friendly or confused. :)

Hell, I probably got the numbers wrong.

As far as learning it goes. Speaking it is a snap so long as you can hit the tones correctly. It is one of the more simple languages to learn...and trust me, after three years of Latin, Chinese was a breeze. Two words...NO declensions! I always struggled with reading it though...I was good for a while, but THAT is what truly suffered from no longer studying or using it.

Hello...taiwanese....May I call you brother? haha .....

Ni hao ....May I ask you wether you support the independence or not?

I recognize myself as a Chinese so you can call me brother. No problem.

I don't support Taiwan independence but neither do I support reunification under PRC. I am pro-status-quo. However, the "status quo" is changing by Taiwan independence movement, and that would bring us with disaster.

I don't like Chinese communist party, especially Mao. The present PRC government is much more acceptable, but their political attitude to Hong Kong democracy is totally unacceptable. I promise you. If your government keep treating Hong-Kong politics in that way, you will face more and more hostile people here including me.

I think if GCD government take taiwan peacefully, it will bring taiwan more freedom to develop. Because taiwan is different from HongKong any way.
But if taiwan is token by force, taiwaness have to take the bad damage from the war.

Yea Hkers are different. We are MAD AS HELL :fork:
We don't want independence, we just want the autonomy guarenteed in the basic laws. Yet Beijing refused to live up to the promise and produced a 1/2 million demonstration two years in a row! (HK population: 6 million) 1/12 of the population went to the streets two years in a row. Any democratic government would have collapsed after the first demonstration..

They even blackmailed the 3 political mouthpieces of hk. They ar silented now to protect their family.. More so, mainland government officials told HK-visitors to China to vote for this pro-China party in the up coming election.. The chief executive of HK, the puppet of Beijing was re-elected 'democraticlly' by 700 pro-China political elites of HK.. Dispite the fact we all want him dead.

If mainland is to win the hearts and minds of Tawain, it won't be this generation.

:) . I have seen too much displeasure from HK people. First, I admit the policy GCD government used in HK is not that sucessful or flexible.
What I realise is GCD government want to get experience on how to rule a democratic world like HK, and use this experience on Taiwan after China is unified. Because at that moment GCD government still thinking they can take Taiwan in a peaceful way. But obviously, this try didn't make every one happy, and Taiwan is going to independant further and further. In future, GCD will make its policy more flexible.
And on the other hand, GCD also want to learn from democracy to improve the party itself. If you know the dark side of china, the reason is very obvious.
Nothing in the world is perfect. What we can do is to make it better. :D

I have seen too much displeasure from HK people.

And I think rightfully so. If anything corruption is more rampant in Chinese (and Hong Kong) governments than before 1949...I mean, its crazy. Then of course there is the whole democracy thing.

But obviously, this try didn't make every one happy, and Taiwan is going to independant further and further. In future, GCD will make its policy more flexible.

The need to fix the problems or at least try.

And on the other hand, GCD also want to learn from democracy to improve the party itself. If you know the dark side of china, the reason is very obvious.

I am not a religious man myself, but I heard a rather interesting interview on NPR in regards to Christians in China. One of the main driving motivations for mainland Chinese to become Christian is because they understand that the concepts of democracy are written within the Bible. They are quite literally becoming Christians ini hope to attain a democracy in the future.

An interesting take. Maybe the PRC needs to be a little bit more allowing when it comes to religion there.

Nothing in the world is perfect. What we can do is to make it better. :D

Too true, no government is close to perfect. Nor do I think any of us could come to a consensus to what what a perfect government is. The point remains, however, that some governments are preferred over others and the PRC does not rank to high in the "Oh yeah, I want to live under their rule" chart. ;)

glad to see u here....Its very hard to find some taiwanese who is not crazy

Which city do you live in ?

Someone told me that people who dont supprot independence live in North Taiwan..people who support independence live in South taiwan..
true???

We also dont pleasure with the situation of democracy in mainland
but what we should do is not to pull down the current government
we should help the GCD government to promote the democracy.

The situation has been much much much better, right?

Ok....keep doing ......

I dont want to see a foolish war burn out between taiwan and mainland......I think that if mainland government doesnt have enough power to reunified China,,,we should wait and wait......
Both sides should wait .....

You dont declare the independence,
We dont use the force.....
Peace is the most important......

Peace can bring money....HAHAHAHA........
